Window creaking and coming back down when using one touch

I decided to take a look at the drivers window mechanics the other day. Mine was creaking when it was up fully (pushing my hand against it seemed to solve it every time, as if it wasn't seated properly). When the window was fully down it seemed to rattle a lot when the door was being closed (as if it were loose) and if it were half way down, moving the glass by hand also gave a creaking noise (a scratching kind of noise as if the glass were touching off something). There was also the annoying intermittent problem of it sometimes stopping half way up and going back down.

To remove the door car,
1. Remove the tweeter, gentle pull and it will come off and disconnect the cable.

2. Remove the 7 x Torx screws from around the edges

3. Remove the plastic part from the door handle (the part which your fingers would wrap around). This will enable you to pull up the door handle (snap fittings). Remove the electric windows connection.

4. Remove the 3 screws behind the handle

5. Remove the plastic fitting that holds the wing mirror adjustment, disconnect the electrics and remove the screw thats in behind it.

6. Now the door card is read to be removed, pull it out at the bottom and slide it up (easier with the window down). Don't forget to disconnect the LED cable, the red & white door open light and the door open/close cable before lifting it too far up.

Before I started messing around I took the window out, just in case !
7. Just loosened the nut on the 2 guide clamps (don't know if thats the correct name), and lifted the pain of glass out.

I connected back up the electrics to the door handle and moved the guides up/down, unfortuantely I let it go too far up and the guides just came off the top of the rails so I had to take out the 2 rails to put them back on (just not enought room to get the hands in).

8. To do this I loosened off the 6 x Torx screws showen, see the green arrows. Lift the rails up a little and they come out easily. With a bit of movement the rails come out okay.

I then operated the guides while I had them out but couldn't see much wrong so put them back in and put some grease on the rails.

9. When I had them back in I put back in the pain of glass and tightened the clamps.

I found a bit of movement in where the guides could be clamped onto the glass. When I initially tightened the clamp there was a creaking noise when I pushed against the right guide, so I loosened off the guide clamps and adjusted the positioning of the glass. I think its the way the pane of glass was clamped is what was causing the creaking noise, as tightening the clamp in different positions meant the noise came and went. maybe it wasn't sitting against the runner tight enough and hence creaking.

Moving the window up/down seemed to be a lot better. It wasn't loose when half way down, didn't rattle as much when down fully and when up fully it wasn't making any noised when pressed against.
More importantly the stopping half way up seems to have gone, but its only been a few days.

To put it all back together, just do the opposite. I did find it easier to loosely tighten the torx srcews around the door first before screwing in the 3 philips head at the door handle. When these are in then tighten the torx around the edges.

I'm constantly getting that problem with my car.
Think I've just found a way to waste a few hours tomorrow. Better than watching Eastenders re-runs with the Missus.

The problem of the window going half way up then down again is a common problem which, I believe, is shared with other VAG cars. Mine sorts itself out when the ignition is switched off then on again.

I tried putting the window up/down a number of times last night, then had to take a spin over the back roads and while at a set of traffic lights the f**king thing went back down again.

But it is definately a lot tighter than before and the creaking noise seems to be gone.

Anyone know if theres specific instructions on how to set-up the window position in the "clamps". Also does anyone have any idea if there is supposed to be movement between the clamp and the white part attached to the guide rail (I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be or if it was wear and tear).

Gaff,
great sequence of photos - could have done with something like that for the Fabia - I tried for hours to get into the guts of the door to fit central locking to a Classic Fab. Got all the door card and furniture off ok but could never get access through the metal panel separating me from the window mechanism - I see the Octy has a plastic membrane (like every other car I've worked on) No doubt the metal panel aids side impact but it's a b*gger to get off. Even found myself wishing for a Haynes manual on that occasion - how frustrating is that ?

The "one touch" operation can be reset. Close your drivers door, stick the key in the door and hold it in the "unlock" position until all the windows open and continue to hold it in the "unlock" position for another 10-15 seconds or so. Then hold the key in the "lock" position, hold it until the windows roll up, and then continue to hold it for another 10-15 seconds. That sets up the one touch operation.

Also, I saw a service guy from my dealers perform the same thing using the switches in the drivers door control panel. With the ignition on, hold the window switch down for 15 seconds, then hold the switch up for 15 seconds. Can't say for sure if this works, but the key method definitely works and I think the procedure is even outlined in the Skoda owners manual!

I seen that done when in with the dealer before and tried it but it doesn't seem to have made a difference

Have a similar problem with the 1 touch windows.
Slightly different, is that a 70 mph run on the motorway with the drivers window either half or fully down, when i get off the motorway just before home, and try to use the 1 touch, it goes up , and bounces down half way. The 1 touch to close the window then doesnt work, can only close if the button is held to close position.

1 touch works after the car has been stopped and ignition key removed & car retarted.

Not worth trying the key open/close method, as i have to take the key out of the ignition in oreder to try, I know that it will be reset when i switch it on. ( btw i don't carry the spare with me ).

I've noticed on my car that if you hold the switch so the window closes, release it then hold it up another few seconds, it works fine......until the next time.
That's how the electric windows have been reset on my 3 previous cars too. Industry standard maybe?

Any chance you could find out what the installer did to rectify it?

Electric window replacement

I have just replaced the entire electric window assembly on my 2000 Octavia TDI SLX.
The new gubbins were from a VRS but now I have no one touch or control of the other windows. Any suggestions?

The creaking has definitely improved but the issue with the window coming back down is still there.
