Winter wheels?

I have been wondering about getting a set of cheap wheels for winter for my vRS. Up here in Scarborough, we get the odd bit of snow and this is my first winter with an Octavia. How do they fare in the snow on standard wheels, and what should I expect?
My cunning plan was to buy some steelies and put the skinniest winter tyres on them for if/when we have some of the white stuff. Is this a fair plan or am I just worrying about how it will perform on the 205 tyres?
No doubt a lot of you have driven on snow in your vRS, so your advice/experiences would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Andrew.

Re: Winter wheels?

Your best choice is Conti Viking Contact 3 195/65 on 15" wheels.
Exellent performance on bare surfaces, in the snow, and even on icy roads!
Not the cheapest you can get, but well worth the money!

Re: Winter wheels?

Thanks for the relpy, I'll look into those. Does the insurance need to be informed if I put different wheels on? If they are Skoda Octavia wheels, then does this cause a problem? Dumb questions I know, but that's me all over.
Any advice from you all is appreciated.

Re: Winter wheels?

will 15" fit a vRS? I could be wrong but I thought someone told me they had to be at least 16" or they wouldn't fit over the calipers... or something lol..... oh ignore me, I'm rambling

Re: Winter wheels?

Octavia Elegance and VRS estate both had 16" alloys that will fit over the VRS brakes.

Re: Winter wheels?

I agree with Puss that you need 16" or larger wheels to fit over the 312mm brakes.

Re: Winter wheels?

What's the skinniest tyre I can put on though? When I look at the pictures of the WRC cars, they all have really thin tyres on to cut through the snow. I wouldn't have thought that 195 tyres would be much different to 205's in bad conditions?

Maybe I'm just panicking and shouldn't worry, but I'm expecting the Octavia to be rubbish on ice and in snow. Is this the case?
