Is your VRS noisy on cold start please read!!!

Some of you have got bad information on your threads about noisy cold start.I drive a 03 VRS with 22k on the clock. At about 18k a noise start on cold start up,this noise got progressively worse and started to last longer.I took the car back to my very helpful dealer. The problem turned out to be a secondary pneumatic pump that sends exhaust gases to the cat.(this is an Audi part not skoda) was at fault. My dealer changed this part without question, his feeling was that this part was changed on more then a few Audi TT under warranty.if you need anymore info on this subject contact me cheers!!!

I have a 02 Octy RS with 48k miles. There are two different noises I notice when cold starting:
1) Upon turning the ignition, a vibration noise (could be the engine liner tray) for 1 or 2 seconds
2) When moving off in 1st, If you squeeze the throttle too firmly, the engine note changes, and the performance is slightly down. This is rectified by easing off the throttle.

I think mine just needs a few bolts tightened..... must be the hard landings!!!

And as for bad information, its only bad if the secondary air pump is faulty. As with all advice given on Briskoda none of it can be taken as 100% as we cannot see or hear the car to diagnose a fault. As with any problem a trip to your dealer is allways advisable. Just because your car had a faulty air pump doesnt mean everyones will be that cause.

Sad enough to say but VAG has made Skoda what it is today. Dont think we would be driving around in quite the same car without them.

I don't think I'd even be driving a Skoda if it weren't for VAG - never mind the same car!

My folks often remind me and my brother how we used to mock when we were kids for them even thinking about buying a Skoda - and now we're both proud Skoda owners!

No apology required, you were helping out with a question and giving advice which may well help someone which is good. And you are right secondary air pumps do get noisy so its something to look for.

Derek, Can you describe the noise you had, mine is running like it has a blowing exhaust for the first 30-40 seconds when it starts up in the morning accompanied by a slight almost misfire sound, then whatever causes it switches off and it's fine again, thing is it doesn't do it every morning, just occasionally

Sounds familiar to me, don't know what causes it though (sorry).

Derek
my octy vrs does that too. Sounds like the exhaust's blown when it starts up, then there's a bit of a click and the engine sounds normal again. No idea what it it - hopefully perfectly normal??

Its the secondary air pump running quite normal.

Air is pumped into the exhaust to weaken off emisions whilst the cat is warming up. It also aid in actual cat warming aswell to bring the light off time down.
