Unhappy '05 Rear Light (Drivers Side)

Evening all,

Tonight I managed to reverse my car into our recycling bin and caught the light cluster on the corner of the bin - doh!

Any ideas how much a replacement will be and part numbers?

I assume the unit will have to be changed, unless the plastic is a separate part?

Cheers

Lee

Re: '05 Rear Light (Drivers Side)

You really won't need the part number for that as they will be able to figure it out as it's a major part. Yes the whole unit will need to be changed and you will be looking at probably around £20-30.

Cool - thanks for the info and aprox price. I suppose Skoda will mark that up to at least double. Anybody know a decent supplier where I could get one from?

VRStu: Ha! That's about double then from Skoda....

Wonder if there are any elsewhere... I've checked eBay but can only find >04 lights - and they are a different shape aren't they?

Re: '05 Rear Light (Drivers Side)

Do you have a mk2 Octavia or a mk1? The mk2 didn't have any tail lamp changes throughout it's life, so any year works.
If you can get a used part from a breaker's yard that would be better, as it will match the age of the other one better and look more in unison. It's not much for some people, but people like me see it in minutes.

Re: '05 Rear Light (Drivers Side)

That's not entirely relevant, as the mk1 was still produced for a while, and, for example, it's still sold over here as the Octavia Tour.

So, this is a mk1: http://www.caradisiac.com/media/imag...2-rs-02big.jpg
And this is a mk2: http://www.autorevue.cz/Obrazky/2006...avia-rs/01.jpg

Re: '05 Rear Light (Drivers Side)

Evening...

Sitting down?

I got a quote from Skoda today.

£143 and some pence fitted inc VAT.

So - if anbody knows where I can got a cheaper one, please speak now!

The tail light is for an 05 Octavia Elegance - drivers side. The white part looks like a reversed C. All I can find so far (on eBay) are ones with two white lines across the middle.

Re: '05 Rear Light (Drivers Side)

It's the fitting that is bumping your quote, you need it supply only for comparison.

Surely it's only a 20 min job to replace it? I've seen how easy the front lamps come out...

Re: '05 Rear Light (Drivers Side)

The prices I posted above are genuine prices so that should give you an idea of how much they are charging for the installation.

Yeah - charging a fortune (read: rip) to install it.

Re: '05 Rear Light (Drivers Side)

The thing you need to bear in mind is that although it maybe is only a 30 minute job, you have to allow time for the tech to get the car in, do his paperwork etc so they'll most likely want an hour for it.

Yeah - understand the minimum would be an hour.

That's still £100 - £110 for an hours work. That's a bit steep in my eyes!

Not really - Any skilled person would charge the same. Solicitor, gas fitter, organist, priest, skilled car mechanic...............

Re: '05 Rear Light (Drivers Side)

Open up the rear access to the light, remove the bulb holder and there are 4 nuts to remove. Tightening torque is only 3NM so don't go mad when doing them up.

Re: '05 Rear Light (Drivers Side)

Depends on your capabilities.

I think I'd be confident to turn it around in 30 mins including getting out/putting away spanner etc.

Re: '05 Rear Light (Drivers Side)

Well - I've managed to source a replacement for a slightly better price.

It's arrived and I just need to install it. It has the 4 bolts but I can't see anywhere to plug in the connector for the bulbs. It has the bulb holder - and bulbs in there as well...but nowhere to plug them in.

I assume all will become clear when I remove the old one at the weekend, but if anybody can put my mind rest, that would be great.
