1.8 petrol engine - Opinions ?

Hello,

Currently got a 2.0 diesel Touran.

Looking to possibly replace with an Octy Estate.

Whilst I love the pull of the 2.0, andthe economy is good too, we only do about 9k a year ! Quite a chunk of this is around town, so not sure whether DPF would get choked up easily ?

Therefore, wondering what the 1.8 petrol is like ? Looks good on paper - nice flat torque curve. However, what average mpg are people getting in real life ?

Re: 1.8 petrol engine - Opinions ?

We test drove the 1.8 a few weeks ago and it was great. My husband drives a 2.0 Audi A4 TDI and we both questioned whether the car was actually on, it was so quiet. The pick-up was excellent and overall very smooth. The dealer said he was getting the same mpg as in the book. Impressed. Quality wasn't as good as Audi but better value for money. Only problem is high mounted rear seatbelts garrot the kids necks.

Re: 1.8 petrol engine - Opinions ?

I recommend the engine. I have a heavy right foot, and in rush hour traffic I am getting around 32 - 35 mpg. I am sure it will do better on a long run and when the engine loosens up.

As others have said, when stationary in traffic you have to check the rev meter to see if the engine is running as it's so quite. Lots of low down torque, and brisk acceleration. Recommended!

Also looked at Touran 2.0 Diesel, but wouldn't really use 7 seats, and preferred estate over mpv. We bought a Laurin Klement Estate and I think it's a bargin, and as well built as the VW Touran, if not better.

I love my 1.8t L&K estate! Excellent engine, lots of pull, good acceleration, and OH-SO QUIET it's amazing!! You really have to concentrate to hear it. My MPG figures haven't shown to be that good if i'm reading it right, but it's on a '58 plate with <500 miles, so is still loosening up. Very glad I got it over the vRS which always felt more needy and sounded louder: I have found it's a joy to cruise on any road in this and suprisingly, my general driving speeds have been brought down in reflection of it!

No more SP30's hopefully, thank you very much Gordon Brown!

Re: 1.8 petrol engine - Opinions ?

I've done 15.000km with my O2 1.8 TSI so far and I'm more that satisfied. It's one of the smoothest engines I've ever driven, it pulls straight from 1,5k RPM and it is really very quiet.

I didn't buy it to save fuel and I do admit I've got a heavy foot. My average consumption is 8,5 litres / 100 km (approx 28 mpg - if online calc is right).

Sounds a cracking engine - will have to get the Mrs to have a closer look.

Another quick query if I may - is it chain or belt driven cam ?

VW Group have reduced the cambelt change to 4 years, so is this engine bound by the same rule ?
