1.9TDI - harsh engine note!

Hi all,
Hope you're all right.
I've had my Octy (bought 2nd hand) for 7 months now and pretty pleased with it. It's been great to be a part of this forum as well with much interesting and helpful advice.

Anyway, this thread is for those 1.9TDI engine owners. I've notices that my engine has developed quite a harsh metallic sound between 1300-1800rpm. Strangely, it's really noticeable once the engine is warmed up and when crawling around in 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear. It wasn't like this when I first got it but its there now.

has anybody else had the same - is it normal?

Cheers.

Yes, it had it's first variable service back in February. Funnily enough, just prior to the service, I was really noticing the harshness of the engine in this rev range - really quite loud as I turn into my road and into my drive (driving in this rev range in 2nd gear). After the service didn't really notice it for a few weeks but it's since reappeared. If its the oil, I've still got some way to go till the next service. I have checked the oil level but it's well within limits.

I think I will have to get the local dealer to check it out but wanted to hear what others felt. If it was only when the engine was cold I could understand it but I would expect the engine to be smoother once warm. Its not really the diesel rattle, as I've described, it's a very metallic harsh tone.

Mine is quite loud but i would not say metallic noise.Sometimes my engine is running 7 hours non stop and when hot is more "loose" but by no means harsh. My Mk1 1.9TDi was more noisy than this one.

Re: 1.9TDI - harsh engine note!

I was going to suggest maybe it was time for the first change, but if you have had it done that doesn't sound ideal to me. I mean the TDI isn't quiet, but i wouldn't say it sounds metallic.

I take it that is isn't the turbo just starting to think about spinning up.

I'd check the correct oil was used at the service (VW 506.1 or VW 507.0 ) and ask the dealer to take a look at the issue.

Best of luck and let us know how you get on

This is very likely not the engine at all. I would put money on it being a sympatheic vibration from the air box, or maybe one of the other usual suspects like the fuel filter bracket. The air box vibration certainly sounds like what you describe (metallic, in that rev range, crawling in lower gears.)
