2.0 TDi running a bit lumpy

Hi, My occy seems to have developed a bit of roughness when running around town. when you reach around 30-35 and feather back a bit on the accelerator, it starts kangarooing a bit. Put your toe down and it dissapears again. It runs fine on the motorways and is fine when at idle. It doesn't seem to matter what gear you are in when it does this. Has anyone any ideas on what this could be, or is this definitely a trip to the stealers?

Cheers,

Martin

Re: 2.0 TDi rnning a bit lumpy

Sounds like the notorious 2.0TDI issue that is usually known as the 'Stutter'.

The engine appear to cough and misfire slightly under light throttle at about 2300-2500rpm. Noticeable on the motorway at about 75 -80 IIRC (of course none of us do that kind of speed on a public road do we...)

Both of my 2.0TDI's have done it and the vRS does it on very rare occasions.

As for a fix - I know there was a fix for the Fabia vRS that suffered a similar problem but I don't know if SUK have bothered to sort the 2.0TDI as yet.

IT gets much worse if you fit a performance filter as well.

Funny thing is, this started about a month after the service. It didn't do it before. Did yours do it from the get go or did it develop over time?

Re: 2.0 TDi rnning a bit lumpy

If its happening around 3000 to 3500 rpm I would be thinking its a fuel lift pump issue.

How many miles have you done?

Re: 2.0 TDi rnning a bit lumpy

I've done just over 25,000 miles, the problem seems to be about 1500 - 1800 revs though. It is definitely under light throttle. Just tried it under cruise at that speed and it doesn't appear to happen then. Not sure if that's relevant.

Re: 2.0 TDi rnning a bit lumpy

Mine never does it when the cruise is on but will do it under manual throttle usage, my 07 does it and my '06 did the same thing too. I just live with it. Never had any faults logged either.

Re: 2.0 TDi rnning a bit lumpy

The fuel was my first thought, so I've tried a couple of different ones (Esso being the latest) and it's made no difference. If it's a common fault then fair enough, just seems strange that it's a recent phenomena. Surprised Skoda haven't sorted it out if it's a very common problem though. Could it be something to do with the accelerator pedal (or the controller it's connected to) getting a bit "Noisy", much like a volume conrol can?

Re: 2.0 TDi running a bit lumpy

Mine used to do it, which got worse over a period of time. No longer does it since having throttle body replaced.

Re: 2.0 TDi running a bit lumpy

Mine has just started doing this today.

Seems to be worst between about 1200rpm and 2300rpm. Almost non existant above 2300 rpm and also not noticeable when squirting the throttle, it's just when crusing. Very annoying, I've also seen a fairly significant drop in fuel economy too - maybe related? No change in fuel . . . used the same fuel for months now from the same station.

Re: 2.0 TDi running a bit lumpy

Weird thing is, Mine's stopped doing it again now. I've heard lots of peeps say it's the Throttle body that gets a bit gummed up. Cleaning it out solves the problem, but if it's under warrantee, the stealers should replace it for you. If the problem comes back, I'll put it in and let you know what happens.

Re: 2.0 TDi running a bit lumpy

Mine decided to start shouting about the problem by bonging, lighting up the CEL and displaying "Emissions Workshop!!" on the maxidot screen.

Car booked in for Wednesday, but I have a lot of miles to drive between now and then.

Re: 2.0 TDi running a bit lumpy

I don't know if i'm having the same problem but i've started to notice the engine is lumpy under idle, but only when the engine is warm. Its fine when cold, but when warm, you can feel the engine juddering through the seat at idle. I find that it is worse when i have been either moving along slowly and stopped, or stop start in traffic and then come to a hault.

Also, from cold, when the outside temperature is above about 15 degrees, if you pull away and stop, you can here a knocking noise coming from behind the steering wheel when the engine is at idle. Isn't there when outside temp is cold and doesn't go away once car is warm. Any ideas?

Car goes in next week anyway so i'll speak to the dealer.

Car is a 2005 2.0 tdi.

Had a similar problem on my PD140 some time ago - dealer changed the 'Vacuum Valve Body'? and the problem went away, I was told this was a known fault and cure.
