2.0 TDI Whistle

Hi there

Do you think this sound, from this link rel8r: Audi A3 2.0 TDI Turbo Whistle is normal for a 2.0 TDI engine?

Mine does the same, but 4 times weaker.

Thank you.

Mine's pretty loud. I've yet to see a drop in power though.

Re: 2.0 TDI Whistle

is it as loud as the one on the vid gillywibble? Ive just recently had mine in to be checked as i thought it had got louder and was popping out odd clouds of grey smoke now and again. Theyve said it all tests fine but i dont think they had it apart.

Was wondering if there was anything I could log or test in vag-com

Re: 2.0 TDI Whistle

It is as loud. Sounds exactly like mine.

There is mention of it possibly being caused by an air leak from the pressurised house after the turbo's compressor stage (see this link - http://www.briskoda.net/forums/fabia...g-turbo/58026/)

The dealer told me it was common. When i've got 5, i'll check the hose.

Mine does the same - around 1600 - 2000 rpm and it's a weak whistle 1 sec long..
In the service they told me it's a "normal functional sound" coming from the turbo.

Re: 2.0 TDI Whistle

I've always had a very high pitched whistling noise which is normal , but of late I'm getting a lower pitched sound between 1500 and 2000 rpm. The best way I can explain it is that if you give it some throttle then lift off it sounds similar to a siren rising and falling in tone , like a police car in the distance.

It's certainly something that didn't happen before but I've not noticed any performance change yet

Re: 2.0 TDI Whistle

It's weird nobody found a "solution" to this. Maybe it's not a problem at all; maybe it's a normal sound in the end; maybe we haven't heard it before just because it's a weak sound...

Mine does that as well, has done from new (14k miles now). Never caused a problem.

The OP's video might be putting the sound out of context because the mic of a camcorder will pick up different sounds at different levels than a human ear?

Re: 2.0 TDI Whistle

I've heard plenty of TDI engines old and new over the years and have yet to come across one that sounds like that. It definitely sounds sick to me, not sure what though as I'm not that clued up on TDI technology.

I think the mic on the camera is putting the sound out of context but the engine is definetely whining rather than whistling. It actually sounds more like a supercharger than a turbo!

Re: 2.0 TDI Whistle

My dealer told that to me, too - "it's normal".
Though, if you look here http://www.briskoda.net/forums/fabia...turbo/58026/2/
UWO says his dealer replaced some components... so.. I'm a bit confused now.

That's exactly how i would describe the turbo whine from every volvo i've ever had. Was never anything to worry about...
