2.0tdi whistleing noise????

i've notice a wistleing or wooshing noise from my 2.0tdi, this changes at low rev's when setting off. my mates a technician for VW and he reckons it may be something to do with exhaust settings off the turbo??????? (er, ok)

car went in for service last week and the bird took it, pointed out the noise when she arrived. on reciept of the car the Technician said "it may be the brake pads as they're half life", this does it when the cars stood still....never heard so much tat...anyone heard of this noise?

Oh yes and its not just the turbo, this is different to that.

Re: 2.0tdi whistleing noise????

My 2.0TDI has whistled since day dot as I accelerate and get into the turbo range (2000revs+) - seems perfectly natural to me.

Either that or we're both shafted...

Maybe a small leakage on the intake system?

It's worth checking it over.

It's just the turbo whislte. Mine does it and people have even commented on where the police are coming from due to the noise it makes

yes that is exactly the sound, it does sound like a police siren, but the thing is it didn't do it before. should i be bothered taking it to the dealer?

Re: 2.0tdi whistleing noise????

well does the car feel like it's lost any performance? Mine seems ok and it's been doing it for a year now. just took it that it was the turbo is now worn in and is spooling up a bit faster.

Re: 2.0tdi whistleing noise????

Ours whistles as well - done about 17k miles on an 06 plate. Certainly goes well enough (replaced an 05 plate 330Cd which also whistled a bit) - feels much quicker than the 53 plate 130 TDi we owned from new...

Mine also makes a noise like a police siren in the distance. Never noticed it until the wife pointed it out one day. Mentioned it to the Service Manager and he said "Mine does that as well". He thought it was the variable vanes on the turbo and was not a problem. Time will tell???

Mine makes the noise too. Happens just before turbo boost comes on, e.g., when pulling away at about 1300rpm? I'm not worrying.

Re: 2.0tdi whistleing noise????

Mine does it too. Started a few months ago after doing 140 mph on a race track, somewhere. Took it the stealers and he said it was normal, just the turbo loosening up. Haven't lost any acceleration, so I presume it is okay.

Re: 2.0tdi whistleing noise????

My Leon does it too. It is quite loud & happens below 1500rpm when on & off the throttle.
I thought it was normal, but before I picked up the car, the technician at the gararge wanted to change the turbo!
Anyway, it's getting a new turbo fitted next week under warranty.
We'll have to wait & see if this cures the whistling.

A friends Vauxhall started sounding like a police siren, he said it never used to do it before. Then on the motorway a few months later the turbo failed, caught fire, and spat oil everywhere.

Re: 2.0tdi whistleing noise????

I had a 2l sport tdi pd with manual 6 speed box. When it went for service , the service manager pointed out the whistling noise and said that the turbo was on its way so they replaced it under warranty. It did cure the noise but performance wise there wasn't any difference. It had done 20,000 miles when replaced. Have changed car to a new sport tdi but with dsg box and this one as yet does not whistle. Car is 5 weeks old and has now done 4800 miles. Being used as a taxi though !

Re: 2.0tdi whistleing noise????

I think the siren type noise is just the air being compressed when sucked in by the turbo. My car hasn't missed a beat since I got it 40k on it still runs like new
with no rattles or sqeaks. good quality vehicle. only problem I have is the reversing aid has a mind of its own, hopefully it will get fixed at next service.

same old same old, some garage will change it others seem to think its normal. The car hasn't lost any performance, its just a tad annoying as your always thinking the rozzers are after you....

36,000 miles now and hasn't missed a beat....Great car.

how do you treat your turbo, say if you have come off a motorway, and then turn the engine off, or have been using lots of boost, do you turn the engine off straight away or do you allow it a couple of mins to keep the oil circulating to cool it?

if i had the luxary of living near a motorway that would be one thing, i've never changed the way i drive since new, use the power as designed, never got to a point where i've needed to let her cool down, only myself... my buddy has a STi Scooby and i no he does if its been driven very hard...

I'll probably give a month or two as she's just 2 years old now and under warranty so i'll wait a bit and then start pushing the dealer

Had my turbo replaced under warranty today. The whine/whistle has gone with no loss in performance either.
