If skoda were not going to bother with a sporty range they would not have bothered with the Vrs range; which is popular in itself. I would have guessed that most people who have a Vrs have got one because it does everything a GTI does in performance but adds better value for money.
I don't think anyone said the 3.2 ltr is pointless, in fact on the contrary, it's a very good engine, but it doesn't suit all types of car.

As far as I'm aware it's only Audi and VW that use it. Seat and Skoda don't.

As for why Skoda wouldn't use it in the Octavia:

1) The VRs is already the performance model in the range and there would be little added performance from the 3.2 over the 2.0T anyway.

2) The 3.2 is a bit of a drinker therefore expensive to run (trust me). This therefore wouldn't be consistent with Skoda's good value approach to producing cars.

If Skoda were going to increase the performance of the VRs they would undoubtedly use the 230 bhp engine from the GTi E30 or the 240bhp engine from the Leon Cupra. That's a big if though!

in classic fashion i've just had a quick goosey and the difference is quite good

the BMW is a tad heavier by 55Kg(half the weight of an average passenger, ish) but it has 101bhp more and 88lbft more, the BMW is limited to 155mph and the vRS will only hit 149mph, the vRS has a 0-60 of 7.1 where the BMW is 5.3.

suffice to say the BMW is faster

Apparently a Desrestricted 335 is good for a true 174mph. On a power to weight basis the 335i has a similar advantage over the Vrs as a Vrs has over a MkI 130tdi octavia!
I'm not knocking the Vrs, its a great car and I'd love one but that gives you an idea of how rapid a 335i is.
A friend with a 350Z says it is one of the few cars that he has been beaten by, other than Ferrari's and the like obviously! I'm still not sure about the looks but I reckon the new 1 series 135i would be a hoot to drive....

Re: 3.2 ltr option like r32 or 3.2 quattro?

Ii think I got my Skoda, because like many people, I thought I would get a VW/Audi quality car for many thousands less. But I reckon VAG must by now have got Skoda positioned exactly where they want them and that is not stepping on the toes of the ‘Big’ two. I would love a 3.2 V6 Octy/Fabia, but surely it would be an embarrassment for the premium parts of the stable, if a Skoda costing a fraction of the cost of the Golf,A3 etc could perform at the same level. They have to maintain some degree of brand hierarchy. So I keep my fingers crossed for the day when it happens, but don’t hold my breath
