4x4 Mountains snow,beach in 1 day,

part 1 of 2
Yesterday we decided to avoid Zagreb because Bush was here ( see chat thread). So we set off at 7am down the motorway towards Velebit Mountain 250km away to the south, and try to combine mountain walking and beach combing in 1 day . It was a very overcast day, and as we approached our first destination some wood huts owned by the mountain lodge keeper . Stepping out of our 4x4 Octy the high winds of a 150km per hour Bura wind were well and truly blowing. We had phoned ahead, but the keeper still didn't think we would actually come, Didn't you hear the forecast he cried !!!. We were advised that if we really were going to walk our faithful friend ( dog Medo) in this blowout, better to do it closer to the foot of the mountain ridges and within the confines of the wooded area. So we drove off for the track leading to the mountain base, firsts over tarmac, then onto increasingly rough road services, see pics. Deciding that this was far enough, ( Scout owners probably would have gone further) we parked dressed up in extra warm gear, armed with compass, knife, water, and food , and dog, we headed higher. Then higher !! and then snow and more snow, until snow was over our boots, ( think even Niva's would have stopped ), as ledges may have been a problem if one slipped. However we are not 4x4 pros, so maybe nothing would stop them, but for us we were glad to have parked where we did. We ate some sandwiches, wife rock climbed, dog ran around, and by noon we were back in the mountain lodge having a well earned hot coffee. .

On road in the morning heading for the mountains, black skies," Bora" blowing hard.

Starting the rough sections up towards the base of the cliffs.

Decided far enough for us.

Time to reverse.

Only place to turn around and then park.

Parked !!

Showing why we decided to walk the rest.

Lunch

Second part of the same day on beach in next posting.
