| 6 gear ratio change Hi everybody I've done 2000 km with my new octy 4x4 1.9 tdi, and yes, 6 gear manual gearbox. Now that I'm a bit experienced, I feel that the car is quite fuel consuming (gazole), around 7-7,5 liters every 100 km (average urban and motorway). I have to say that I was used to a 6 liter consumption, with my old Golf III 1,9 tdi 90-power. So I'm trying to save fuel, and I'm having better consumptions putting next gear before arriving 2000 revs-per-minute. Then I start accelerating again since 1500 rpm average. I feel the car has enough torque to accelerate easily since this position, but I'm asking if changing gears this way would be harmful in long term (comparing with changing what I thought normal, when reaching more than 2000 rpm, and starting accelerating from about 1800 rpm). Regards |

| Re: 6 gear ratio change I've found my 4x4 TDI Estates economy to be getting better with the extra miles I’m putting on it (now 2,500 miles in a little over a month). Consumption now is nearly always over 40mpg which is good as I live in a very hilly area and do a lot of stop start urban motoring (not to mention I have a heavy right foot). You need to remember the Octy is much bigger and heavier than the previous gen golf plus you are also going to take a hit from the 4WD system. Everything is relative, my girlfriend gets 47+mpg from her Fabia vRS which is more powerful than the Octy but it's a much smaller and lighter car so I wouldnt expect to achieve the same. Keeping the car in low rev's shouldn’t damage the car as the engine is generally happy and able to pull in most gears from a little over 1000 rpm, but you will find it frustrating to say the least but economy should improve. Remember that the manufacturers fuel figures are done in laboratory environments and should always be taken with a pinch of salt (expect 10-15% less as an average unless you live in Holland and only drive on quiet windless days). |
