Ad on autotrader...a bit fishy?

SKODA OCTAVIA 2.0T FSI VRS 5dr Estate - Auto Trader UK
spotted this on autotrader....too good to be true?, only has 400 miles on it. What does Cat D mean (just spotted that bit!)

Claims to be an 07 model but it has green brake calipers.

Any thoughts?

Dan

Doesn't look fishy to me. Expect to pay 20% less than book for a Cat D.

Re: Ad on autotrader...a bit fishy?

Cat D is minor damage. Chances are the car was on an insurance policy with a new for old clause in the first 12 months. After the owner damaged it the insurance would have paid out for a new car. This one would have been recorded cat D, and resold. The damage could be something really minor like some oik keying it down the side.

Cat D means it is repairable and not uneconomical to do so, but the insurance company has decided not to

The ad states it was smoke damaged in the showroom from the workshop, having another look the only strange thing is the private plate, it may have already been registered at the time of the damage though I suppose.

Re: Ad on autotrader...a bit fishy?

ad says smoke into the showroom but no damage.

Is Cat D recorded against the car for the rest of its life (reducing its value) or is someone going to land a real bargain?

Re: Ad on autotrader...a bit fishy?

There was a fire at a garage and the stock was all classed as cat D, someone posted it on here a few weeks ago.

It's recorded against the car for life but would be a good buy for someone looking to keep the car long term or do high mileage and as such wouldn't be as concerned with retained value.

Re: Ad on autotrader...a bit fishy?

Cat D classification is basically light or cosmetic damage. In this instance I would take a punt on the car may well have been registered to the new owner awaiting delivery, the garage had a fire whilst the car was in the showroom and the customer insisted on a new car that didn't smell of smoke. Total bargain if you ask me, but you will be hit when it comes to selling as the car will be on the HPI register and therefore worth less than a 'HPI Clear' car. As the previous poster stated if you plan on keeping the car a long time or do a very high mileage then its an out and out bargain as any hit the Cat D classification has will be minimal owning to age etc.

Re: Ad on autotrader...a bit fishy?

That very same car was on ebay a while back, the seller said there was a fire at the dealers and the car had minor smoke damage.

Why don't you take a look at it? Theres nothing to lose. However expect a lower re-sell value as Justdoit said. Not a problem if your keeping it for a very long time.

The other point is, if you decide to look at it and make an offer, remember this guy has been trying to sell it for a while, so he may accept a much lower offer.

If it is such a bargin, why hasn't it sold?

Good luck!!

I remember seeing it before - was a fire at a garage in Grimsby mentioned?

Re: Ad on autotrader...a bit fishy?

If I was looking I would seriously consider it, but my car is only 8 months old.

The reason I was looking is that I may be getting a new job with a company car and I currently take a cash allowance, so unfortunately my vRS may have to go. I was having a look at what people were asking for thei cars.
