Default Car tax for a new car

Just about to get delivery of a brand new car for the wife. i have heard that since it is the first time the car is registered that the car can be taxed early. Does anyone know who early it can be taxed? I have heard it is a week but also been told it can be up to 2 weeks early. hence I could pick the car up this Friday and effectively have 12months and 2 weeks tax on it. Is this right?

Not sure how far in advance you can go but your dealer should know and do it for you if you let them have your insurance details

The tax must be valid on the date you collect the car, so if its this coming weeken then the road tax must start on the 1st July, so you lose 2 weeks.

Some dealers have special arrangements with the DVLA to enable you get a tax which starts in the middle of a month, but you must pay for these additional weeks ontop of the 6/12 months

You can add up to 2 weeks on a new tax disc (ie to allow dealer to register/book sales etc before end of month, but real 12 mo tax begins next month)

It costs £6 per extra week irrespective of tax rate (VED)

This can only be done by a dealer and on brand new unregistered cars (the disc issue is automatically triggered on date of first registration)

I always ask for it (and for them to pay for it!), else you lose a month's tax just so the dealer can book a car on 31st July not 1st August etc!

Their triggered bonuses far exceed £6!
