Corroded Front Brake Discs on the inside

brake disc inside view.JPG

Hi All,

With regards to the above image, I will be phoning Skoda to ask for an inspection on both front brake discs. We bought the car at 14,810 miles the car now has 26,000 miles on it. What l'm asking is have any of you experienced this problem? The car in question is Vrs 2006 on a 55 plate petrol. I am aiming for a warranty claim and hopefully get both front discs changed.

Re: Corroded Front Brake Discs on the inside

I phoned Skoda UK with regard to the corroded brake disc, the man l spoke to said the it's up to the dealer on what action is taken once the visual wheels off inspection is done. So here is hoping my dad as he is dropping the car off gets some good news. Failing that I'll be £184 short as l will have to fork out for 2 x dics's and a set of brake pads to replace the the existing setup.

Re: Corroded Front Brake Discs on the inside

not owning a mk2 i'm not certain but are the pads supposed to run that far inside the disc?? are the ones that are on there the correct size? you get rust on all brake discs (except ceramic and other fancy materials) is steel that is exposed to hot + cold, water, salt they are bound to rust except the friction area where any surface rust gets rubbed off.

Hiya and thanks for the comment, I'm 100% the pads on the car are original skoda. But surely with only 26,000 miles on the clock both N/S/R O/S/R discs are pretty well corroded.

Re: Corroded Front Brake Discs on the inside

Then again in hind sight my dad reckons the brake pads were taken from a porrous casting (where water has got in and contaminated the casting hence compromising the liquid metal)

Re: Corroded Front Brake Discs on the inside

Could we not have posted this in your other thread?

Same advice applies. It's a 2-3yr old car with low mileage. As such it does a lot of standing around, which aids the corrosion. Same applies for exhausts. Low miles the exhaust gas doesnt get up to temp, so mainly unburnt fuel = faster corrosion. I've had cars hitting 60K before thinking of needing an exhaust! Dad does 5k/year, and his 3yr old 15k Mazda 3 is getting an exhaust this weekend as the back box fell clean off!

To give you an idea
Works car (56 plate mondeo) has had first set disks all round and 2nd set of pads @ 63K. My Mk 1 octy never had any work on the brakes and reached 45k in 3.5 years.

Low mileage is a killer for almost all cars and will cost you nearly as much as a high miler would have.

Dont expect Skoda to replace these is my advice. Normal wear and tear.

Re: Corroded Front Brake Discs on the inside

To be fair I've never seen a pair of discs wear like they have.

If they are the 312mm discs then the calliper should clamp the outer edges of the disk on both sides. I'd suggest that there is an issue with the calliper on the inner edge of that wheel.

The inner face of the disk is the side that the piston operates on with the outer face having the pad slide in the calliper. I get the impression that pad wasn't in correctly or was able to move in the calliper at some point as otherwise you shouldn't have got the rust up the top.

You might get the calliper fixed, but I'd expect them to ask you to make a contribution towards the cost of the discs/pads since they are part worn.

To be fair if you ask your skoda dealer for a good will discount on the brakes parts, I think you will be pleasantly surprised and the improvement in price for the work.

WRT the rear discs, they do that on low mileage cars as the work load put through them isn't usually the great.

Re: Corroded Front Brake Discs on the inside

Well the idling problem has been fixed now, the silver beast is purring away now. As for the brakes everyone one was right, l will be buying new dics and pads (not from skoda) hopefully from GSF car parts in Glasgow.

Thanks to you all for putting up with my mad rant

I believe the disc's on the MK2 Vrs are 312mm, is this correct? I fancy the Brembo sports disc's, What do you guys think?

All suggestions welcome

If you wanted OEM stuff again that can be had quite cheaply.

Re: Corroded Front Brake Discs on the inside

It was an impluse buy, the words drilled and grooved were out my mouth before l realised oooops. I should have them by Saturday (fingers crossed). I was speaking to the parts manager at Henry's North in Glasgow, he is driving a fabia Vrs with the 312mm Octavia Vrs brake upgrade. Also noticed a 06 plate petrol Octavia Vrs with grooved discs on it sitting parked at the side of the dealership as well. Also the guys at GSF in Glasgow were very helpful as well. I want the ETOS system they use it looks very helpful

Thanks for all your help it is much appreciated.

Re: Corroded Front Brake Discs on the inside

Hi All,

Received telephone call today from Driver's in Glasgow, that's my black diamond drilled and grooved discs in. I was in the shop on Saturday, the gentleman ordered them Monday and they arrived this morning Tuesday. So l will be looking at possibly an induction kit and a CAT back exhaust. and dump valve to finish everything off. Does anyone have have any recommendations regarding induction kit, CAT back exhaust & dump valve?

All suggestions welcome

Cheers

Andy

Re: Corroded Front Brake Discs on the inside

the car doesn't need a dump valve, but if your after the sound, the forge blow off spacer is highly recommended, all it does is make a noise though. exhaust has got to be the milltek cat back and as for induction kits, there seems to be a few good ones out there, im looking at the Evoms kit personally. have a search on here

Re: Corroded Front Brake Discs on the inside

Hi All,

The new uprated disc's and pads were fitted Saturday morning at my Dad's work, unfortunately they weren't Black diamond (as they don't do VRS Mk2). I now have a set EBC Turbo groove & dimpled discs along with EBC Redstuff pads. Also priced Milltek CAT back as well £600, also priced the full system too £1700. Will have to save hard for the CAT back option and REVO (£585) remap as well. And Forge Spacer to go and make WHOOSH noises as well lol
