Cracked Engine Cover

I was checking the oil level on my vRS TFSI yesterday evening and noticed that the grey coloured central section of the engine cover was cracked on both sides immediately above the oil cap. On the left hand side of the cover the plastic has sheared around the clip that fixes it to the main cover and on the right hand side is showing early evidence of cracking.

Ive had the car about three months and though I check the oil regularly it is the first time I have noticed the cracks. I certainly have never had any need to put pressure on top of the cover, so think that I may have bought the car with the problem or something else has caused it?

I was wondering if anyone has had a similar problem. It appears that the cover simply clips onto the main cover but I am reluctant to remove it in case it causes more damage and prevents me getting it replaced under warranty!

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have a TDI vRS and the cover is slightly different, but the fixings (probably the same) are just push fit into rubber bung thingies, so steady firm pressure will release them safely.

I actually had a problem with my cover working loose until I realised that it is in two sections (centre and outer) and that it was best to fit the centre section and then the outer band. Don't know if the TFSI cover is one or two sections though.

Sounds like someone may have tried to push the fitting into the hole but that it wasn't lined up, breaking it.

IMHO I'd be straight down to my dealer for a new one under warranty although they might well say you have broken it. If so time to be firm but polite and say 'not me'.

Took it to my local dealer yesterday as by sheer chance the airbag warning light came on. That was repaired under warranty as was speaker rewiring under recall.

They were not interested in replacing the cover under warranty or contributing to the cost. It appears that the grey central section of the cover cannot be obtained separately and to replace it means a whole new cover at a cost of £152 + £28 labour. Looking on US VW forums, Golf GTI/Jetta GLI owners remove these grey covers (and subsequently break the clips) and replace them with new painted ones. I was wondering if I could get one online and try this with mine first?

Whether its a coincidence they also told me that the ecu software needed upgrading and would be requesting a CD from Skoda specifically for my car. However, first thing this morning my service indicator came on with 4500 miles or 20 days to the service.

My car is on variable service and is 13 months old with 6600 miles. The car was previously owned by the wife of the of the dealers MD. I think it was only used for short journeys hence the low mileage. I just find 4500 miles/20 days an unusual relation.

It could well be an expensive couple of weeks for me!

The variable service works by keeping an eye on the oil quality.

The engine cover comes complete, including th MAF and air filter which is why it is expensive. I would imagine that yours was broken in an attempt to remove it.

The US guys tend to remove the grey covers and fit them to an after market cover made by EVOMS.

Finding a 'spare' engine cover is like trying to find the proverbial rocking horse dung. I know several owners that would love one.

There is an ECU update required for 2200 UK registered TFSi Octavia, obviously yours is one of them.

I did have the infomration but then mislaid it so I am waiting for a replacement.

From what I remember it's something to do with the CEL. SEAT and VW have been doing them as well.
