| Differences in Black Magic paint??! Been phoning around to get hold of a tiny pot of Black Magic to colour code my grille and after speaking to the Newbury dealers bodyshop they say there's about 10 variants of colour even though they all share the same code - Black Magic 9910. They suggested speaking to the guys they actually get their paint from, and the lady there said in their books they show 3 variations: the most normal version, a slightly blue-er version and a generally slightly lighter version! I understand that this colour has been around for a LONG time and that it does make sense that variations can occur when batches are mixed ever so slightly differently, but has anyone come across this before or has anyone had problems with matches? Everyone else just seems to state one colour, bang, done & dusted, so I don't know how true this is. They said if I just drive down there they can match it once they see the cars paint next to the chips they have, but it's quite out of my way (just happened to be near them today so I thought i'd call that dealer but I was in the wife's Leon) and would like to get it a bit nearer if possible, but am now concerned it may look... off if this is true. Opinions & ideas? ![]() |

| Re: Differences in Black Magic paint??! Well I've had my grill colour coded by a paint shop and one of my front wings re-sprayed by Chips Away and both times they obtained the paint code from the sticker under the boot lining. The match for both is spot on.

| Re: Differences in Black Magic paint??! I spent a bit of time working in a VAG bodyshop, the best way to get a match is to take it to a capable shop where they will mix the paint for you and use a colour card before spraying to ensure the match is correct. It will cost a little more than doing it yourself, but that's so much better than seeing or feeling that there is a tonal difference. My twopenneth anyway. Billy

| Re: Differences in Black Magic paint??! Cheers SMS, I think I put the 9910 paint code in my original post. I agree, that a decent paint shop is the place to go as opposed to the monkeys at Halfrauds. I just wondered if anyone had heard about different shades within that one paint code. |

| Re: Differences in Black Magic paint??! There's no chance of me spraying it myself, I just need the paint to be correct, that's all. |

| Briskodian | Re: Differences in Black Magic paint??! When I bought the paint for colour coding my grill the paint shop had eleven variations of black magic on file. It is essential to take your car with you and hold the paint chips up against it in good light. It's not only the shade but also that size of the metallic flecks which can vary. It depends on what you're painting, but it is essential to have a good match if it's in a noticeable location, a slight mismatch stands out like dogs you know what. |

| Re: Differences in Black Magic paint??! Yeah, That's what I was told by the garage with the three variations but my spraycan monkey just told me that cos i'm only colour coding the chrome grill bit and not trying to match an existing bit of the car, ie. repair of a ding or scratch, it's not gonna make any difference that'll be noticeable. Sounds good to me! |

| Briskodian | Re: Differences in Black Magic paint??! Don't you have those places there that use a little tool to pick the colour off the car directly, like a scanner? They get a perfect match everytime.
