Dodgy tyre wear......Warranty job?

I had my car serviced today and mentioned to them the rear tyres were wearing badly on the outer 1/4 but not worn at all on the inside 3/4 of the tyres .

The car tends to misbehave especially when changing lanes on the motorway and the back end likes to break free more often than I like, take a roundabout a little too quick and the ESP light is flashing like mad bringing the back end into line, turned the ESP off and pulled a similar stunt (on a private piece of land, mind) and the car spun out way too easily, obviously there are issues with the rear alignment

Anyway................

The dealer told me I would need a full 4 wheel alignment check costing about £90.

Seeing as this has been a problem since day one and the car is only 5 months old wouldn't this qualify as a warranty issue? I would ideally like a new pair of rear tyres but I fear that is pushing things too far..........or is it?

Re: Dodgy tyre wear......Warranty job?

See you are into Air Conditioning. Do you carry a lot of weight in the car for your business??
Do you think that has had any bearing on things?
I normally keep my rears up to the max recommended pressure for heavy laden in my Bora. Currently 38500 on the originals and I will probably need new boots in a another 2000miles.

Re: Dodgy tyre wear......Warranty job?

Yes I do carry quite a bit of weight in the back but I had pretty much the same car before the L&K and the tyre wear was even on the rears and there was about 5mm tread left when I handed it back when changing jobs.

It had done about 35,000 miles or thereabouts so that's what makes me think about the rear wheel alignment being off.

I've got 2 hopes: Bob Hope and no hope

I'll phone SUKCS (see what I did there?) and see what they say on the matter, I suspect the response will start something like: "You have 2 hopes.................."

Re: Dodgy tyre wear......Warranty job?

Seem to remember Stu mentioning that on the vRS there were two sets of alignment settings and the latter revised ones resolved issues with excessive tyre wear and dodgy handling. As with all these things, I'm struggling to find the thread with it in!

If it is 4-wheel alignment, I'd go to a proper tyre place to get it done as it'll be much cheaper and they'll be able to give you a printout showing the full set of settings your car is running. Plus, they'll probably have had some training in how to use the equipment!

Re: Dodgy tyre wear......Warranty job?

Cheers Chris, i'll find the revised settings and get me a decent 4 wheel alignment done. The F/N/S wheel has taken some nasty potholes of late so a 4 wheel alignment can't hurt.

Re: Dodgy tyre wear......Warranty job?

Those settings were the subject of a TSB so your dealer should know about it however imho you are as well to get the 4WA done yourself.

Re: Dodgy tyre wear......Warranty job?

I don't think i'll even bother persuing the warranty route.

The car is only 5 months old so I would assume it had the revised settings but judging by the tyre wear that isn't the case.
