| Wow! I just had to share this. I knew my car had a big boot from the day I first looked at the showroom model, but my experience just amazes me. The boot is so big I literally have to climb into it get things that are against the seat backs . I bought the boot netting system, which at £30 is a great value accessory by the way. I needed the netting because if I went to Tesco by the time I got home (on country roads) the groceries were all out of the bags because I never more than 1/4 filled the boot. Now the best bit - the real test was when I was picking up a second-hand bed from a friends house - it was a full sized single devan bed, complete with mattress and head board. The guy who I was picking it up from suggested I borrowed a mate's van since the bed wouldn't fit into his Volvo estate. I took out the measuring tape and thought I'd give it a go - maybe I'll need to tie the door down but we'll be ok for 2 miles with a bed sticking out the back. Well the bed fitted in just fine - it dropped down along the boot sill perfectly (admittedly I had to slightly move my seat forward, but not to the point of it being uncomfortable). Next came the mattress and the two drawers, head board, and parcel shelf. The hatch door shut without any forcing - there was still room on top for other stuff if I'd needed! The Volvo estate driver was speechless! Now the weird bit - why is the Octavia considered a small family car? Small in what way? I'm wondering if Skoda have Doctor Who working for them giving them so much internal space in a "small car". Feeling very smug. McTeagle Last edited by McTeagle; 19-01-2006 at 01:27. |

Well the bed fitted in just fine - it dropped down alone the boot sill perfectly ( Wow I have an old single bed I’ve wanted to throw out for a couple of years now and it wouldn’t fit in my Toledo or Mk IV Golf. Guess I’ll be able to take loads of stuff to the tip soon and save hiring a van. Know what you mean about the small family car thing. My current Toledo just scrapes in through my gates and can, if I get a run at it, lodge itself firmly up the side of the house. The new Octy would demolish my gable end if I tried the same stunt, it’s sooo much bigger. 9 weeks gone, only 6 more to wait…..are we nearly there yet? |

| Re: Dr Who, are you in there? Thought the boot in the old octy was huge but I too was astonished when i saw the shere size of it in the new one.... expecially as the new octy also has rear leg room.

| Briskodian | Re: Thought nothing of it I brought two single bed matresses home from a store, thought nothing of it when they just fitted in to my hatch without problem. I agree about the boot net, invaluable. Mine came as partof the Elegance kit. |

| Re: Dr Who, are you in there? Well it's the wrong thread I know, but we go to our place by the coast quite a bit in the summer in the Mk I Octy, and in addition to the suitcases, boxes of grub, washing, musical instruments (for the kids), miscellaneous other stuff, etc, we get all 3 cats in separate carrying cages across the top of the heap, so they can see out of the back window. And it's the hatchback, not the estate. Maaaaaaaaaaaan, it's big. |

| Re: Dr Who, are you in there? Before: I went climbing, arriving late at night at the end of any road, get out and slept on the ground, besides my car, waiting for the sunrise and the alpinist experience. Now: I do the same, but with my new octy II combi, me and another alpinist mate sleep inside the car, completely flat and straight (the accesory back box is great for that). And still driving a real car, the safe and cheap way. Just looking for a portable matress to unflate and be as confortable as home (considering outside the car will be windy, under cero degrees, and probably snow). Thanks Skoda for that, and for the 4x4 option (last weekend I would have had more serious troubles and that icy country road). |

Dan Gurney [you'll like him - good looking guy a bit like Schwarznegger or Sting] one of the best F1 drivers to come out of the US. His car was called the Eagle [Weslake V12 engine I think]. I saw him win non championship F1 "Race of Champions" at Brands in 1967 . I was going to a lot of racing then and also slot raced 1/24th as a hobby, mostly Le Mans cars [GT40s and Ferrari P4 etc,]. Hey, we were all young once!!! p.s. if you like buzzy engine sounds you should have ordered a 2.0FSI not a disease'l - my little cooking family car sounds fantastic in the gears!! Sometimes I'm looking round for the wings!! Last edited by ednmra; 24-01-2006 at 10:13. | |

Hey, we were all young once!!! I think I might have heard of Dan Gurney or perhaps I’m confusing the name with one of those ‘old time’ record breakers that wiz up and down the Bonneville Salt Plains. I also now realises that a 1/24th car is a Scalextrix kind of a thing, I thought it sounded quite small. I know it’s hi-jacking this thread a little but I just had to tell someone….I just won ‘letter of the week’ in today’s new Autocar magazine for a thing I wrote about retro-styling. As a result I get a free Road Angel I think. Yipee! Except I’ve just bought one and thrown away all the packaging so I can’t return it |
