Fab vRS to Octy 2.0FSI Sport?

Soon to become a dad for the first time I am thinking about trading my Fab vRS in for a new Octy 2.0FSI Sport or Ambiente. My wife isn't too keen on me changing again so soon (almost 1 year since I traded CTR for Fab vRS) but I've been using the following arguments to justify my plans ;-)

1. Need a bigger car for pram, baby seats etc. (well duh ;-)

2. Bigger gap between back end of car and read seats so safer if get bumped from behind.

3. Fab vRS can be very bumpy on certain roads and want a more comfortable/smooth ride with a baby in back.

Now here is my dilema... I had a 1.9TDI Octy Classic courtesy car last summer and it was very compliant on bumpy roads (can see why taxi drivers love em) - very smooth going, slightly wallowy on corners but handled very well even with standard suspension I thought.

So obviously the Ambiente will meet all of my arguments above no problems, but I'd like the Sport for the bodykit, spoiler, bigger alloys and as a driver I'd like the sports suspension.

So my main question is: Would I still be able to use argument no. 3 if I bought a sport?

Note this is on the petrol version (don't ask... I've enjoyed the torque in my fabia but I want to go back to petrol) so I don't know if it will be tuned slightly differently for the heavier diesel lump than the petrol....

For the record I tried an Octy II 2.0TFSI vRS estate last week and found that to be slightly softer than my Fab vRS?!? Is this because the car has longer and wider wheel base than the much more compact fabia?

I'm hoping some of you can comfirm this so I can go ahead and order the Octy sport but please give me honest responses even if it means I can't get one because failing to meet all of the requirements above will spell big trouble for me after using them as bargaining chips for being allowed another new car ;-)

Would imagine the sport susepnsion on the octy will be similar to the oct vrs. Don't agree with your comment about the oct vRS being softer than the furb tho unless your furb as been modified? Drive both regular and would have said they were on a par with the furb being slightly softer paticularly over potholes and round corners. If you don't want the jarring go for the ambiente or even an elegance, or jst buy an octy vRS and have done with it

Edited to say: We carry grandson in back of octy vRS and he falls asleep no probs

In agreement with PostmanPat.... I traded my Fabia VRS for an Octy VRS due to the new arrival. It was a nightmare fitting pram and all other stuff in the boot of the Fabia but the Octy swallows it all and more. As for what version you get ... I went for the VRS cos didnt want to loose the fun factor. Baby sleeps perfectly fine in the back as well.

There are a lot more safety features on the new Octy too so perhaps there is another point to argue.

I was in a simialar situation a couple of weeks ago.... I had a fab vrs, got a baby, bought an octy sport tdi. Had the octy a couple of weeks now. So far I'm happy with the ride, though I think if you want more comfort than the fabia vrs it may not be for you. I was happy with the comfort of the vrs suspension and the octy sport is similar if a maybe a little bit tougher IMO though I wonder if this is more down to the 17s and low profile tyres. When cruising the octy is smoother than the fab vrs and quieter but you do feel the bumps on uneven roads. That said our baby has been fine, sleeps through no problem and I've had no complaints from back seat passengers though I never did with the fabia.

That aside the octy has been a great choice - the boot is simply huge and loads more space in the back for the little one and passengers. As mentioned earlier the safety list is a little better too with side airbags and ESP.

You could always get an Ambiente and add the 17"Pegasus alloys with sports suspension.

I got a Mk 2 Octy Elegance after a Mk 1 vRS and couldn't believe how much better it felt. All I miss is the occasional "punch in the back" from the turbo but it still sails away at speed.
Goes over speed bumps like they weren't there. Doesn't seem to wallow - nice handling - huge boot. But I understand as soon as you start altering the original spec for wheels and suspension it starts to get harder ride etc. Just depends what you want.

My Furby is standard btw and while the suspension on it is nowhere near as firm as my CTR was, I don't think it's as soft as some ppl seem to...

I did feel the Octy estate vRS as being a more comfortable/refined a ride than my furby, but putting that down to it prolly being very similar stiffness of suspension but on a bigger car without that heavy diesel lump...

I'm erring towards the sport atm, will let ya's know if I join the Octy club.

The 2.0FSI drives very nicely. You cant really go wrong with the Octavia Sport.

motorpoint had some excellent deals on the 2.0fsi sport when I was buying mine - something around 10-11k iirc although they may have been imports. Its definately worth shopping around though as there are some good deals on the sports.... I was after the tdi and got over 4k off list for a pre reg 06 one with 12 miles on it.

Went for the Sport and hoping the ride is refined enough that the missus doesn't notice it's got sports suspension (one of my reasons for 'needing' to change the car so soon now that our baby is almost due

Wanted black but none available so 2nd choice is red, was liking the pictures Shorty posted of his red octy II TDI sport

Can anyone with a 2.0FSI say how it performs compared to a Furby vRS. On paper the Octy is about 0.3s faster to 60 and has a few mph more at the top end but how do they compare in the real world? Much difference if any? (wasn't able to get a test drive in one but the 2.0TFSI on the vRS was lurvely *drool* if only I could afford one of them atm lol)

I done the same as you - Grandson came along so not enough space in the Furby boot. How can something so small need so much kit?

Im sure you wont be disappointed with the ride - its fantastic and a very good compromise, sporty but at the same time not too jarring. OK over very rough roads at slower speeds it can feel a little jittery* ie it feels like its skipping from side to side but it more than makes up for this the moment you point it at a sweeping bend with you foot welded to the floor

Theres much less body roll than the Furb too, it just feels alot more planted. Sorry I cant comment on the petrol engine (I have the TDI) but Im very happy with mine, theres just tons of room / space inside.

The only thing that may tempt me away in the future is the vRS.

Talking about affording one of these bad boys did you check out the used ones? There are heaps of them out there at the mo (Skodas used web site) I saw one on there for £13995 in black with all the good bits, 18" alloys, dual climate etc, only 6000 miles too. 55 plate IIRC seemed a bargain. I know there are other expenses, insurance, fuel etc but its a much cheaper first rung of the ladder. Wonder if the TDI vRS will get down to that sort of money?

I dont do new anymore. I know some are not happy with ex demos but ive had three and no problems, well nothing I wouldnt have had on a new one anyway.

congrats and a good choice of colour, black does look good but red its loads easier to keep clean! I think you'll definitely appreciate the space and the body kit looks good too, sets it apart from the other octys imho. Am looking forward to hearing what you think of the engine too as compared to the fabia, oh and post some piccies when you get it...

Got my red Octy II sport. Am well impressed :-) The handling is simply superb and yet the ride feels significantly more refined than it did in the Furby vRS.

Not opened it up yet as keeping under 3/4 of max permissable revs while breaking in but I can tell there is plently of urge there :-) In fact I also tested the 1.8 petrol civic (and the 2.2CDTI ) when I started looking at bigger cars and have to say the 1.8 petrol felt extremely limp with foot to the floor. I was expecting the 2.0FSI to feel a bit limp while breaking in with low revs compared to the torquey furby but it's nothing of the sort :-)

Another happy member of the Octy II sport club ;-)

Will report further once broken in and opened up properly....

Glad you like it. Upto 1,600 miles in mine now. Had a trip to the lakes at the weekend and was so impressed with how it cruises, and the handling round the back country lanes really is very good

atm I'm getting around 35-37mpg indicated, just done my first fill (to pump cutoff) and reset trip so will have a more accurate idea in a week or so... on one hand hoping it will improve as it wears in, on other hand by then I'll be pressing the go pedal harder

so time will tell.

I'm so glad to be back to petrol though, I just prefer the way it feels, much smoother power delivery and I enjoy working the gears... diesel isn't real driving

Also like being able to drive with my window open again now I have a nice engine note again and not a tractor

No offence to the PD crowd mind

I kinda enjoyed riding the torque wave on my furby vrs for a while.... it weaned me off the CTR nicely.

Had a Fab Vrs and now have a red octy sport tdi

The octy is bigger, smoother, just as quick and brakes & handles far far better than the fabia ever did... Fabia turned more heads though and stood out a little more but the Octy is deffinately a nicer car... and the seats don't fray / get dirty as easily as the fabia
