Help... How do I fit a new Panel Air filter to my vRS

Hi all,

As I know engines about as well as I know my personal finances I need some advice on how to remove the engine cover to change my filter to the new pipercross one that I have just bought. I presume the filter is situated at the back of the engine under the cover. I've searched the forum and have had a little go but to no avail.

Stu, Jono where are you when I need you...

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Remove the engine cover as described in the link below:

DIY - Removing Engine Cover - VW GTI Forum / VW Rabbit Forum / VW R32 Forum / VW Golf Forum - Golfmkv.com

The panel filter is housed in the engine cover - you need to unscrew it from underneath to separate the two parts of the engine cover. You'll see the panel filter inside so simply swap it with the new one.

The engine cover takes some getting off but you need to give it a firm pull directly above the mounting points.

Make sure you don't lose the rubber bits that go on the mouting points. If I recall it's easier to have them attached to the engine cover when trying to re-attach it (or it may be the other way round !)

Should have bought a TDI - the air filter housing is right under your nose forward of the battery. No need to remove engine cover!

Put some silicone on the rubber bungs as it helps get the cover back on - that was Stu's tip I think?

It's really quite straight forward - it's just that the engine cover can be a pain to remove. You just have to be brave and pull hard where the bungs are located.

Indeed, removing the the engine cover for the first time is always the worst for fear of the unknown!

Little tip, to make it easier for future removals spray some silicone onto the rubber bungs
