| Hi Everyone, This is my first post, I am willing to by a new car most probably an Octavia A5 or VW Jetta. One of the questions that I couldn't find any one to answer, whether this cars at the showroom is fitted with DSG or a normal Automatic 6speed gearbox. my question is How do I know what type of gearbox fitted by opening the hod or something like that? |

| Cars with DSG boxes have DSG engraved on the gearshift - obvious really.

| DSG will also have a manual mode so you can control up and down shifts with the gear lever.

| I would reckon without even checking that the normal, non-DSG autobox will return lower MPG then the DSG (which in turn does worse than the manual)

| I have heard from local dealers that DSG is in fact more efficient in fuel-economy and also performance. Only way it is bad for the wallet is the initial price.

![]() Skodas figures for combined mpg from http://www.skoda.co.uk/pdf/brochure_octavia.pdf 1.9 105bhp PD manual 57.6mpg, DSG 47.9mpg 2.0 140bhp PD manual 51.4mpg, DSG 47.1mpg 2.0 170bhp CR manual 49.6mpg, DSG 47.1mpg As absolute figures they are pretty meaningless but they are broadly comparable. Interesting that the more powerful the engine the less hit you take on mpg by fitting the DSG. Performance figures are pretty much identical between dsg and manual except 1.9PD which loses about half a second 0-60mpg. In the real world though, in the hands of Mr Average an auto will generally out-accelerate a manual cos Mr Average ain't got a clue how to wring the best out of a manual. In an auto all you have to do is push the sport button and shove your foot to the floor - even I can manage that Oh! btw - in getting those figures I got the answer to the original question. If it is a diesel auto then it is DSG if it is a petrol then it is tiptronic. They don't seem to fit DSG to petrol models in the current range. | |

| DSG gearbox is only fitted to diesel models. Petrol models are the tiptonic. As simple as that! Quote:
