| mpg / economy Hello people of the forums! I've had a look around, and can't see anywhere better for this, so I'm putting it here!! I picked up my 55 plate (reg'd Feb 06) Skoda Octy Ambiente 36 days ago. It's in the Sahara beige colour - which is not my 1st choice, but was cheap!. It has the 1.9 TDI engine, no DPF (according to the manual). I've not come up with a name yet... I'm a sad, sad, sad little man, with nothing better to do than compare fuels. This is an initial investigation into what fuel the Octy likes. My previous car (Pug 406 2l petrol) really liked Optimax - gave a much better MPG than other fuels. All the numbers below are from the trip computer (using a reset 'set 2'). Basically I drive it until it says it wants more fuel and fill the tank completely to the top with the next fuel - I know there's going to be some mixed from the previous set, but I'm not too concerned about that. I'm re-doing the Shell one this week and will be able to post an update next week with 1 weeks numbers instead of 3 weeks numbers as below. Supplier ____Shell Standard ___ASDA Standard ___Tesco City Diesel Miles _______1830 __________601 ____________594 mpg ________59.6 __________59.5 ____________61 av speed ____35 ____________36 _____________37 time ________52:22 _________16:53 ___________16:01 A note on the normal daily journey :- I live near Northampton (start) drop the wife off just outside Bedford (stop 1) pick up a lift share in Little Paxton (stop 2) drop her off at the Science park in Cambridge (stop 3) and finish in Cambidge Business park. Weekends, the car gets to go round Northampton and Milton Keynes, taking the wife shopping. |

| Re: mpg / economy Keep up the good work: this is sound! Unfortunately, I have the 2.0 ltr engine, but I'll bet this is really useful for those with the 1.9! Well done! |

| Re: mpg / economy My first brim to brim in the new car, so tight engine (only done about 500 now) and I got 41mpg, probably 80% round town, the rest on A roads. Meant I got 410 miles on the trip before I had to fill up. If I was lucky in my 2.0l petrol auto Avensis I was getting 280 miles per refill.

| Re: mpg / economy Good Thread...........Useful to see a resonably valid fuel comparison. I'm glad I use Tescos now, what with the beer, sorry, Clubcard points too! Runboy..........Had similar mpg out of my 2l TDI for the first tank, next one was down to about 38mpg, strangely, but the last one is running at about 44mpg, and rising, after about 1300 on the clock. Been pushing it a little more, so faster and more efficient now. Things definately improve with milage. Phil

Tank one=take it easy, run her in a bit, get used to the car, good fuel consumption... Tank two=WAHOOOO....this thing flies, what fun!...blimey look at the fuel consumption drop... Tank three and onwards=settled down, no point going mad all the time, think of the fuel consumption from the first tank... I've already noticed my estimated range is dropping quicker on the second tank, but boy am I enjoying the torque!

| Re: mpg / economy Hi Rosshand. Have you done any comparisons between the trip computer mpg and actual mpg (brim to brim method and calculation). I monitored the first few tank fulls in my Octy II 2.0TDi and the indicated mpg was 3 or 4 mpg higher than actual. Others have reported this too.

| Re: mpg / economy Indeed I have (but didn't really want to admit to it ) I've not got the numbers for every tank but for the following:Supplier ____Shell Standard ___ASDA Standard ___Tesco City Diesel Miles _______1830 __________601 ____________594 mpg ________59.6 __________59.5 ____________61 av speed ____35 ____________36 _____________37 time ________52:22 _________16:53 ___________16:01 Gallons used________________11.6____________10.8 Calculated mpg ______________51.6____________55 Oh and incase you're wondering - I've avoided BP because it's sooo expensive (however I'm aware for completeness I should do BP & ultimate). I'm only measuring the mpg - not the sound of the engine etc. Unless someone wants to lend a sound pressure meter ? |

| Re: mpg / economy I found over a full tankful where I averaged an indicated 47.5mpg, it was actually 46.4mpg. That was using the same pump at the same filling station.

| Re: mpg / economy I've often wondered about the accuracy of filling pumps.... I guess the trip computer works out the mpg in some strange, odd way...rather than measuring the fuel used it works out how much it should use for the throttle position or something? Anyone know? |

| Re: mpg / economy I always fill to the brim and zero the traditional trip on the odometer. For years I was an advocate of cheap supermarket fuel and the fact that I got points too. I have changed my ways and if presented with a choice will plump for Shell every time. Maybe not scientific but if I use Shell Diesel over Tescos there's usually at least an extra 40-50 miles on the reading (depending on the usual factors, have I been ragging it? boats on the roof? a combination of the two.....) before I have to refill. Now....... Usually the Shell stuff round here is at a 1-2p premium over the nearest Tescos. The usual fill from warning beep to brim is 45 litres or thereabouts so thats 90p over the odds. Except that the extra 50 miles is effectively another gallon of Tescos fuel: 4.5l @ say 95.9 = £4.31 less the extra 90p I paid means that I actually saved £3.41. If you want to take club cards into account then 45l @ 95.9p = £43.15 Which is 43p off our shopping next quarter, even if I trade them in for one of the 4x offers (Alton Towers anyone?) than at most I have sacrificed £1.72. By using better fuel I'm still up £1.69 per fill, and the car runs better for it. "Every little helps"...... Niall (sorry it's Friday!) |

Can anyone else tell me how close the real comsumption figures are aganst the trip computer, especially with a TDI vRS estate? I'm thinking of getting one for my commute instead of the Fabia, but it would have to be close to my regular 45mpg (indicated 55mpg)

| Re: mpg / economy As you know, I know nothing, but three things - one, surely it's better to calculate mpg from average mpg over a period of time (and just take the trip reading as an idea since all journeys are different); Yes "brim to brim", but unless necessary, you get more miles from carrying less fuel weight, leading on to the fact that if you have a car with a big boot, you can tend to accumulate an awful lot of gubbins in there. Probs no help at all. Just thinking that getting it down to fine art could lead to the perfect wrong conclusion, depending on... Regards Mo |

| Re: mpg / economy sorry folks, I know it's rather a boring subject, but when you do, and pay for 600miles a week it becomes somewhat more fascinating :-) Supplier ____Shell Standard ___ASDA Standard ___Tesco City Diesel__Shell Standard Miles _______1830 __________601 ____________594_____________612 mpg ________59.6 __________59.5 ____________61_____________61.7 av speed ____35 ____________36 _____________37_____________36 time ________52:22 _________16:53 ___________16:01__________16:53 Gallons used________________11.6____________10.8__________ __10.9 Calculated mpg ______________51.6____________55_____________56.2 So it would seem from this, that over the same period of 'engine running' time, av speed etc. that Shell is more efficient than ASDA... Once I've blatted this tank out the way, I'll try the BP alternatives. Oh and for comparison - the cost of the tank of Shell vs ASDA here in MK area was 0p (no difference). |

| Re: mpg / economy I run an 05 2.0TDi Elegance and it averages 48mpg, over the course of 4000 miles (or whenever it is that it resets). My car usually just has me in it, with about 80-100 kilos of stuff in the boot and spends a lot of time on the motorway at 80mph but I also have to drive in the city. The best journey so far has been 56mpg and I also agree that Shell or BP does seem to give better mpg then Tesco's. I don't have any figures to back this up, but when you fill up 50 miles sooner then normal, you pay attention, particularly if you do 35,000 miles a year. Sorry if this comes across wrong, i've had a few tonight. Mark |

| Re: mpg / economy I filled up today my 2.0 sport petrol, first time for a full tank since getting the car and the mpg on sainsburys super unleaded is 31mpg which is around town driving and to/from work (10 mile drive) of various limits and average speed of 30 mph. Filled up with the v power stuf at shell tonight (expensive is the first thought) and will see how that fairs when i fill up again in about 2 weeks. |

| Re: mpg / economy My 2ltr PD DSG - over 8 months from new - has only returned 38mpg using the brim to brim method. I do only use the car for shortish tips - typically 10 to 30 miles and this does include the winter months, using only Tesco derv. Best mpg was a longer trip which gave a brim to brim of 45mpg. The trip computer always estimates 3-5 more mpg than I actually get.

| Re: mpg / economy well i filled up friday with more vpower and had an increase in mpg from 31 to 34 mpg just doing the usual drive to and from work and an average speed of 34mph. Im now gonna have a heavy foot with this tank (have already done the motorway and the long fast straight country back roads lol) and will see how this tanks worth fairs and will report back. |

| Re: mpg / economy Quote:
My 2l TDI is now slowly increasing to a more respectable average, and my trip figures are far better after a good long 600mile trip last weekend. About 2500k on the clock now, but mpg started around the 38mpg mark at 0 miles, and is now at about 42.5mpg indicated. BTB method calculations suggest that the gauge under reads by about 1 mpg, so I'm somewhere about 43-44 mpg, all on Tesco fuel. I'm hoping this trend will continue (and seems to be on this tank), to a decent average around the high 40's. Phil

| Re: mpg / economy Good read this thread Although not an Octavia my current Golf has the same 1.9 TDI engine, I've had the car since (new) December 06... Couple of observation's. I'm now up to 7k miles in it, and the engine has kept on losening up and delivering improved mpg every 1k miles that it clocks up. I'm guessing that it will be run in and delivering the mpg it should by the time it hits 10k - not that its carp now, averaging 49mpg on a full mix of roads/conditions over 250-300 miles per week, during the first 2k miles this was around the 45mpg mark. Second thing is it would be intresting to see how rossshand's figures woked out with a dose of Millers Diesel Sport 4 addative in the tank ![]() |
