Multi Function Steering wheel - Audio controls

It really iritates me that I don't have audio controls on the steering wheel. I stupidly thought I would live without it. Now I'll probably end up paying double the option price.

I can see that its not just a case of removing a blanking plate from the wheel and replacing with switches, but replacing the entire wheel

Any one done this ?
I have seen this done on a VW Gold MK5 - but that wheel had the blacnking plate concept.

I would obviously get a pro to do it with the airbag being involved.

I think this can be done and if you are willing to travel a little bit and it may not cost as much as you might think. Will do a little digging

Well, I have them, and let me tell you, they are not so usefull as they appear to be. Angle of buttons is bad for me, as they are not completely vertical but little bit twisted upwards. So, when I want to use them, I have to twist my feast up and look at the steering. I always finish using controls on head unit itself. Controls I've seen on Roomster are better for me and I hope Skoda will use those on all future models.
There is the other problem. You can use steering controls only if you are driving straight, I mean if steering is in fixed position. If you are driving through the city you can't even find your controls as you're rolling steering wheel. On Roomster, they are behind the steering and always on the same place.
I don't know, this is just my point of view. I know each of us has his (heres) own preferences.

love my MFS.

Once you know where the buttons are, find them easy to find no matter the steering angle.

Re: Multi Function Steering wheel - Audio controls

I wouldn't be without the ol MFSW. Even if you find the buttons aren't much cop (they are spot on IMO) the steering wheel looks much better with them.

I only wish you could adjust the C/C from there though.

Would you be so kind to give me some informations about having ipod in Octy?
Is there a way to control it from outside, I mean from head unit or steering commands? If yes, what can you control?
How did you connect the power? Does it switch off when engine is off or no? Do you use batteries?
I need those informations for my next car (Octy, of coarse) because I might not ask for CD changer.
Thanks for any help.

Try this post I made the other day. You can keep your CD changer with it.

another vote for the MFSW here ray, its well worth having especially when you put the ipod on random and want to skip through 15 tracks to the next album.

Ray

Shouldn't be a big job. AFAIK you would need a steering wheel, airbag, a new airbag wiring loom and a little bit of coding.

The obvious cost issue is the wheel and airbag, the loom is pretty cheap and just plugs in. Although if the airbag on your current car was the same shape then ideal.

Surely the airbag would be a direct swap

Re: Multi Function Steering wheel - Audio controls

The airbag on the multifunction wheel is the same, so the only cost is the wheel.

Re: Multi Function Steering wheel - Audio controls

I was hoping for a direct wheel swap with no further costs.... it does look like the airbag is the same..

Would clearly need some kind of loom to connect the buttons to the CAN Bus.

Just need to source a wheel and some nice chap to do the labour.

Re: Multi Function Steering wheel - Audio controls

I wasn't sure on which steering wheel Ray had in the car and hence erring on the side of caution with regard to the airbag, if it does fit then as I said before, Ideal.

You'll also need a control unit that fits into the steering wheel.

It is slightly depend of what type of MFS you want.
There are two possibility - 1Z0419091R - MFS with only radio control and 1Z0419091S - MFS with telephone and radio control. Also you will need new wiring 1K0971584C.

Be sure, that your electronic module in steering column can control MFS. It will be in case you already have MaxiDOT or Cruise Control. If not - may be you will need new module 1K0953549AK and wiring loop 1K0959653C

It is possible to find new MFS on ebay. I did it.

Good luck

Have you got yourself the little module that goes inside the steering wheel?

Stu, I think, that this part always include in MFS like buttons. I do not receive yet my MFS (send money to ebay seller just yesterday), but on pics and discription this module already installed in MFS. The same idea is with Golf V MFS - it always selling with this module.
For connections MFS we need new wiring 1K0971584C. It is cheap (in Moscow - around 40 USD), but it is possible to modify old wiring yourself. If someone interesting, I can send a wiring diagram - but of course, buy a new 1K0971584C is more safe.

I hope you and other can see this pics:

I do not think so. In Golf it is installed the same place, but in other direction and partly under the silver trim. And only white label show us this module.
I have a great collection of Golf V MFS on my PC (as you know, I think about MFS for my vRS longer than I have this car ) and on other pics with big zoom it is better to see this module in MFS

Look here, it is a little bit better:
