My brakes are being gay.

They've started to squeal a bit, and it's a bit embarrassing having a vRS come to a stop while squealing away

So, question is, what are the most common causes of squeaky/squealy brakes?

And, should i just get a Dealer to sort it out, whatever the problem?

Re: My brakes are being gay.

Couple of possibilities as squeely brakes are often a sign of under use, easy to check yourself.

1. A piece of grit or small stone has got lodged between pad and disc; have a look for any tell-tale grooves on the disc. Try a firm application whilst going backwards to clear it, or

2. General build up of dust, road salt/dirt, rust etc.; find some open road with no traffic behind you and, having warmed the brakes first, apply the brakes firmly from speed (60mph plus) a couple of times - this will get the pads nice and warm and clean the surface of the disc.

After this; any problems best to try your dealer.

Re: My brakes are being gay.

Be prepared for a barrage of replies.

Crap and dust in the caliper, grit in the pad rubbing on the disc and maybe the rear of the pads need a good greasin'

Can sometimes be a fault in the pads themselves and the only way around that is to replace them with hetrosexual ones

Re: My brakes are being gay.

Maybe your discs are bent?

Or maybe you've minced your pads by using them too much?

Brakes are always causing problems... one minute they're working and then POOF... they're gone!

I'll get me coat

Re: My brakes are being gay.

Give them a good hard almost but not quite stop from 70/80 on the a31 etc with nobody behind you.

Also might be worth taking the pads off firing brake claener over the disk/calliper and making sure there isn't a lip and the pads are not breaking down.

Of course you should be able to take it to your local dealer and them fix it, but yours is wasteover, so I'm not sure I would bother.

What he said, only do it in reverse. And this isn't a smutty inuendo. Only problem is finding somewhere where you can get up a bit of speed in reverse and slam on the brakes.

And your car probably won't do 70/80 backwards...

Just give them a few high speed runs and hammer the brakes, but release before you stop

Aye, I used to work on there and you should have seen the speeds you could get on a bike on there.

Re: My brakes are being gay.

Some performance pads will squal a little regardless - almost like a ringing noise, its simply a characteristic of the pad.

I do however find most brakes squeal due to lack of cleaning and greasing when they are replaced.

Tom am I correct in thinking that the passat is 5*112 and therefore the brakes would be the same as the Octy II.

If so what did you change on yours to fit the 312mm brakes at the front?

TIA

Not yet, tried some heavy braking, but with only slight improvements. Might just wait til it's service, as it shouldn't be far away as im at 15000 miles now

Re: My brakes are being gay.

I'll check ETKA to confirm things mate.

I've changed the pads (although not necessary), the disks are 25mm items from a V6 Superb/A4/A6, and the caliper carriers also. The calipers themselves are identical.

So if you need replacement disks and pads anyway, this mod can be done for £100
