my car has been in an accident.

I was hit by a woman driver earlier who decided she needed to drive down the middle of the road. after swerving up the kerb with brakes on she managed to break the o/s mirror casing and dent the plastic on it too. not to mention the damage to the alloy when hitting the kerb.

Now my insurers are closed till tomorrow morning, just wondering what will now happen as i dont see why the garage will need the car in for a week when the only painting will be a new wing mirror cover and housing + alloy. im also annoyed as the front tyres are the faulkins 452's and have done around 1k miles so when they replace the alloy i dont want some cheap rubbish put on it.

any advice i have 2 pics for you all.

Re: my car has been in an accident.

I can't make out if the tyre is cut, but if not then why would they change it?

No reason why the car can't be repaired in half a day (they will probably need to give the wheel and tyre to someone to get the tyre swapped over, do any dealers actually fit tyres themselves?)

Re: my car has been in an accident.

from what I can see in those pics, you need an alloy wheel repair (£50 or so), and a new indicator for the mirror housing (£25ish). So you should be all sorted for about £75 which is most likely less than your insurance excess.

This isn't an issue - providing you have the womans insurance details.

Re: my car has been in an accident.

it could have been worst so sinister sheep has told me, but it annoys me more that their are idiots out there who can drive like how they do. i will see what the insurers say tomorrow. i would rather have the wheel replaced now as its taken a hard bang. there is no damage to the tyre from what i can see (thankfully the rims have that thick protector thing). the black painted cover of the wind mirror is slightly domed in if the light catches it right and the mirror is a bit out of place too.

Re: my car has been in an accident.

Will there be a way of getting the insurance to note the "possible" damage to the tyre and suggest that if it were to give out prematurley then its on their heads and responsibility. I'm sure this way that you will be getting a new one!

Re: my car has been in an accident.

The outer cover of the mirror just clips in. I had a simillar issue when I struck an imovable object, it just needs to be reseated correctly.

I dont think the insurance company will replace the wheel, from past experience if it can be repaired it will be hence my earlier comment. If you drive the car and you get no wheel wobble or vibration then the wheel itself is fine, albeit with a cosmetic fault. You could take it to a local tyre place and have them check the balance and true running. They can also remove the tyre and inspect it, most likely for little cost.

Did you get the other parties insurance details or did she drive off?.

Re: my car has been in an accident.

She refused to give her details?
I'd have taken her reg number then let her before reporting it to the police and insurance comapny.

But hopefully it all gets sorted out.
Glad there were no injuries though.

Re: my car has been in an accident.

IMHO you would be better to aproach her with an estimate for a new wheel and the repair to the mirror casing. This will make things better for both of you.

She won't have her insurance problems and IMHO you are better if you can avoid calling yours. If you call yours and make a claim they will settle the claim and then track her company for the funds, if for some obscure reason they don't settle then I am afraid you are left holding the baby - Been there myself many years ago, fortunately I had legal protection but that's another story. There is a nasty little question on insurance proposals which goes along the lines of 'have you been involved in an accident in the last 5 years', to which you will have to answer yes - Bingo, bend over sir!!!

I think if you give her a call and say in the cold light of day the damage isn't too bad and that if she would prefer to give you say £175 for a wheel and tyre fitting plus whatever the cost of the mirror is I dare say she'll do it as it's probably a figure close to her excess. Make sure you get the dollar up front though before ordering parts.

Don't forget to get the tracking checked as well.

It could easily of been knocked out of line.

See if you can get the money from her first.

I found this out when I had a no blame claim in 2001.

My insurance company told me "Even though it's not my fault statistically in the next year I was more likely to be involved in an accident"

My insurance renewal was £100 more 3 months later

Re: my car has been in an accident.

this is what has been driving me mad knowing it not my fault and the fact she has damaged her wing mirror (totally off) she reckons that i am the one to blame. im with directline who do protect against uninsured but this has peed me off as i know that this will have to be mentioned on all quotes for the next 5 years.

Re: my car has been in an accident.

have spoken to the insurers they are happy with what i have had to say and said that as far as they are concerned the claim will be met by the womans insurance and that it wont affect my policy in any kind of way. i also pointed out that if i hadnt taken the evassive action i took by swerving up the kerb that a new front wing, bumper etc would also have been included and would drastically push up the cost. now awaiting for hire car and the garage to ring me as they dont really want the car driven if the alloy has been involved in an accident and i have been told the tyre will be replaced with the same make and model tyre to what is already on there.

Re: my car has been in an accident.

Bit of a pi$$er for you but a) at least she stopped and b) sounds as though you'll be covered fully by her insurance.

Ah well, at least no one was hurt and the damage is relatively minor. Shame you can't get the car written off then go and buy yourself a vRS .

the insurers are happy that she was driving as they did an insurance check to see she was a named driver on the policy and are happy with that. wondered how her mothers reacted to it.

Not strictly true really. Yes they do ask that question, and it's alomost impossible to answer it as 'yes but it wasn't my fault' but it can be done. I put my friend Wayne on my insurance, he's 24 and has a couple of months previously written off his car, but it wasn't his fault. the entire claim came off the other driver's policy so it had no effect whatsoever. He also had a good few points on his licence and it only cos me an extra £3.15 to have him on my policy for a year fully comp lol!

Glad to hear it's going ok so far
