| To be Confirmed | Re: New VRs for £14,499 anyone? I went to motor point yesterday lots of golf gti for 17500 and over but there imports. You only get 2 years warranty and you have to tell the insurance there a import too. When you sell them you have to sell them for less because there a import. |

| Briskodian | Re: New VRs for £14,499 anyone? I tried to buy a new, imported Golf GTi from Mortorpoint a while ago, but they refused to respond to any of my emails regarding warranty, thereby losing any chance of a sale. I could only assume that the fact was at the time I'd only have got a 1 year manufacturer's warranty, and not the 2 year additional dealer's warranty, which put me off a bit, given VAG products (inc Skoda) are expensive to fix and not amongst the most of reliable of cars. If you buy from Motorpoint I'd try to a get a statement in writng from them regarding warranty. IMHO it should be illegal to sell any high-value item like a car, through any outlet in Europe, without a full manufacturer-backed 5-year 100K warranty, in order drive up quality and reduce the environmental impact of disposible goods or those that go wrong all the time, needing parts.... I bought my Golf V5 from Motorpoint in 2002. It came with a 2 year manufacturer's warranty. The third year, which is provided under the UK dealer network when you buy from a dealer in this country, obviously wasn't provided. I'm not sure of the situation now though. The way I look at it is that's it's all about quantifying the risks. OK so you lose a year's warranty. However given you buy the car for circa £2.5k less than UK dealer list price you would need to be pretty unfortuneate for a problem to occur in year 3 that cost more than that to rectify. As for residuals, yes an imported car from Motorpoint will in theory be worth slightly less when you come to sell it but then you paid a lot less for it in the first place so it is all relative. Obviously if you hang on to your car for 4+ years it's unlikely to make that much difference anyway I would have said. As for insurance, they're typically only interested if it's a personal import and then there may be an additional premium. If you bought the car in this country from a car supermarket there is unlikely to be an additional premium. The other benefit is, you can drive away the car on the same day as opposed to waiting 3+ months. That's my two penneth worth anyway ![]()

| Re: New VRs for £14,499 anyone? And you can always buy a third year of warranty from Warranty Direct for about £350 , and after 2/3 years whatever car purchase losses from 20 to 35 % , one can understand why if its got the kit at the right price and available ex stock , thats why the likes of Motorpoint shift so many cars . |

I know they struggle to get VRs's so they perhaps took what they could get - this is the first time they have had any since before I got mine. Apparently when the VRs first came out they took the entire allocation for one year from a dealer in Malta. Options or not, a cracking bargain I reckon. Hopefully they won't get too many more otherwise it can have a knock on effect on the residuals of VRs's in general as the market becomes flooded. The cars would I assume be 07 reg now as they're not pre-registered.

| Re: New VRs for £14,499 anyone? Most of there imports come from Cyprus and Malta. Seen a couple of Golfs come in recenrtly from them - the spec was a little screwed up - nothing major, just little things like a GT dpf(170) TDi that had normal sport alloys and just basic interior trims - like I said nothing major but take into account the 2yr only warranty, and the fact the VW(UK) will NOT make any goodwill contributions outside this period - think I rather get a UK car from either a dealer to DTD or similar.

| Briskodian | Re: New VRs for £14,499 anyone? Personaly I wish they would ban all these imports as they all have an affect on Uk prices, the only problem being without places like Motorpoint importing all these cars, it would be harder to negotiate a fine deal with a uk dealer on a uk spec ![]() |

Not really, it all depends how you pick and choose your statistics, and how you interpret what they actually mean in real and practical terms. It also depends on the time frame and models involevd (is it just Oct 2's in this statistic or all skodas over the last five years for example?). I suggest you get some mathematical and scientific training before throwing in published statistics you probably don't understand! Skodas (and VWs) are only average when you look at warranty claim stats for example, but you can still get pretty bad Jap cars, and have bad individual experiences. All I can go on is that my one Skoda is certainly not built to quite the same fit and finish as the VWs and Audis I have driven or owned, and the stats data taken overall puts the jaopanese brands overwhelmingly ahead of VAG products.

Back onto topic - i got mine from MP and it came with all the bells and whistles for £13,500 - black magic, dual climate, jumbo box, rear electric windows, auto lights, auto dimming mirrors etc.......... 2 year warranty instead of three at my dealer, but you can always buy an extended one. I wouldnt say motorpoints service was brilliant, but i got over it saving so much. Little bit of paperwork to sort out myself warranty wise, but all sorted now. happy days.

The Mk II Octavia was rated 10th for reliability, and 6th for build quality in the Autoexpress driver power survey. Not bad results at all. Having said that I have owned VWs and Audi's in the past and the build quality of my Skoda Octavia in terms of the fit and finish of the interior is inferior - too many niggly little rattles for my liking.

| Briskodian | Re: New VRs for £14,499 anyone? Whenever somebody mentions an import on any car forum the 'you'll never insure it', 'you'll never be able to part-ex it', 'nobody will service it', 'they should ban imports' brigade come out of the woodwork. It's always people who have never purchased an import offering their 'opinions'. Last April I swapped my Mk1 Octavia Vrs for a Subaru Impreza Sti from Motorpoint as I wasn't particularly impressed with the Mk2 Petrol Vrs and I fancied a change. The Impreza was an EU import from Malta and came with 3 years Subaru warranty. Motorpoint gave me the best part-ex price on my 04 plate Octavia of all - they even beat what the local Skoda dealer offered me against a Mk2 Vrs and I paid £6K less for the Impreza than the local Subaru dealer wanted. Motorpoint were very efficient and easy to deal with but didn't have the personal touch of a traditional main agent in that very step was handled by a different person. The car was happily serviced by the local Subaru dealer whilst I had it. I even asked what they thought about servicing imports and was told they had no problem with me or my car. They were unhappy at being forced to pay more for the cars than I had but that wasn't my fault. Due to a change in circumstances (a lot more business travelling and 15mpg don't go together) I wanted to sell the Subaru in November and tried to part-ex it against a new Octavia Vrs diesel. The local Skoda dealer spent ages trying to get me the best price for my Impreza and could manage no more than £16K. I asked if that low price was because it was an import and was told that it made no real difference, they might be able to offer £500 more if it was a UK car. All I can say is I'm glad I purchased an import that dropped from £21 to £16K in 6 months rather than a UK car that would have dropped from £27 to £16.5K in the same period. In the end I sold the Impreza on ebay for £17.5K and purchased a new Vrs diesel from Robert Balmford in Gloucester as they did the best deal - just under £17K , 07model year with 18" wheels, dual zone climate and metallic paint. Picked it up a week before Christmas last year and it's a much better all round car than the Subaru. |

I think it comes down to jealousy, people don't like other folk getting a bargain. I have owned a couple of imported cars and being an import has never affected servicing (isn't that where they make their money?) or trade in value.
