Re: Octavia 2 ECU ReMap Help

Was it off ebay? If so you've probably bought a clone device. Not a genuine one.

Does the device support your car?

Re: Octavia 2 ECU ReMap Help

Thats the problem with these ebay flashers. From what I understand they are clones and so not made to the same standards. Not sure but I think its a case of the look of the draw if they work or not.

Have you tried contacting them?

Yeah, he says he will find out if there is anything extra needed to be done when trying to connect such as removing certain fuses.

Re: Octavia 2 ECU ReMap Help

Hmmmm, shall we wait for the "I've knacked my ECU" thread ?

Something like this I wouldn't really trust e-bay with.

Mate it's a nice idea and good on you for taking the plunge but I really do think you are playing with fire. Unless you are prepared to shell out for a new ECU should the worst happen or a new turbo should you manage to map it with a somewhat sub standard map I would leave well alone.

I'd also like to quote some text from a document I may or may not have seen.

Quote:

4th generation immobiliser (Octavia II)

4th generation immobiliser comes with model range Octavia II and due to its new features, improves the protection against theft.
It is necessary to stress that the system itself provides the electronic protection for the engine control unit and that is why it is important to pay attention especially when accessing the engine control unit.

Differences between 3rd and 4th generation of immobilisers:

Using the brand code prevents the use of different parts among the VW Group

Each kind of engine control unit has its own code preventing so-called chipping / tuning. (255 potential categories)

Coded data exchange between immobiliser and engine control unit even while learning adaptation is applied.

Waiting period of 5 min for learning of new components being installed into the system

Different crypto code algorithm for key and for engine control unit

Re: Octavia 2 ECU ReMap Help

As an engineer who works with encryption and embedded systems (which is what the ECU is), I feel you are playing with fire and quite likely to have problems. Trying to flash program with an unreliable cable/JTAG/etc is the easiest way to break a system.

Do you know anybody with access to a suitable chip programmer who can also solder very well, as you could copy what is in the flash out, and then flash it and if it fails get the old image copied back.

There are a multitude of things which could be done to make a chipped car just die, under the guise of the phrase used on the document that Stu "hasn't seen".

If you are sure you want to do this, then I would seriously make sure you have alternative transport available

Re: Octavia 2 ECU ReMap Help

Yes the interfaces on ebay are clones and can leave you with an expensive door stopper!
It is a clone of a CMD tool by what i can learn. The 2.0 engine uses different ECU's in different cars.
Early models use a Bosch EDC16U1 this your interface might work with.
Next came the Bosch EDC16U34 only expensive genuine kit covers this.
Lastly the new 2.0 170 TDI uses a Siemens ECU and even most of the big tuners cant do this over the OBD port.

As others have said the quality of the file you plan to upload is the most important thing of all.

Hope this helps

Re: Octavia 2 ECU ReMap Help

Many thanks for all the advice!!

Reguarding the comment about taking a copy of the current "flash data" the cable provided is ....."suppossed" to take a copy of original data so that it can be restored later if needed.

If my main problem is with my "cloned cable" where can I obtain an original? I know it will be expensive but I have allready forked out over £1500 on chips for previous vehicles in the last 2 years so in the long run will work out cheaper!

As for suitable maps I have aquired some from proven sources but until I can connect to my ECU to get the serial/model number I wont know if these maps are compatible, I understand that there are differant versions off maps for the same model ECU's.

Re: Octavia 2 ECU ReMap Help

The problem with copying it back via the OBD port is this:

Every system has a bootloader which will bring the system up so the OS can load.
If you screw the bootloader there is no way to bring the drivers up for the ODB port and so no way to reprogram the data back. At that point you would need to get the chip out and have it reflashed by somebody with the right software or a new ECU unit if this isn't possible.

All I am saying is if you do this get a copy on something that requires the chip to be taken out, as that way there is no way you can't reprogram the entire image back on by force.
