Hi All

Any ideas on the following. My Octavia Estate 2.0l TDi 6 speed has developed a grating noise that only exisits when changing up into second or more so into third.

The dealer has reset the clutch and lubricated the linkage, and is awaiting feedback from me. The noise has not gone away in the slightest and is irritating and also intermittant. I am worried that it could be more serious. On fast acceleration its no problem.

I can hear a grating type from the engine bay and also feel something through the pedal when bring it back up from the floor. It only occurs when the clutch engages again or when the gear engage? never when pushing the clutch down.

Any ideas what else it could be.

Dual mass flywheel?? Or a gearbox issue.

Do you get a shuddering coming back up the clutch pedal when lifting to engage it?

DMF failures are a common issue with the 2.0TDI.

I don't notice a shuddering with this particular problem - but I have occasionally in low gears when it isn't always that smooth from standing?

I have a light shuddering when my foot is to the floor and the revs are climbing through the 1300-1500 rpm range, seems to be 3rd, 5th and 6th. Any similarities there?

If the car jerks and/or shudders when pulling off under high load (hill start) it could well be the DMF/clutch assembly.

Hi

The shudder is only ever in low gears. Nothing has really chnaged there over the last two years. The new noise is however only two weeks or so old. Did it loads as I left the dealer and hardly any on the way. I guess it will be back to the main dealer and ask them to explore flywheel and clutch etc. and see what they say then. It only has 3000 miles or six months to go under warranty. So am keen to get it fixed asap!

As it's getting close to the end of the warranty get it back ASAP and let them look again, the flywheel would be a good place to start.

That's the DMF I'd say, i've had 4 of them now and the pretty none smooth standing start is the first sign i got.

Also get them to change the Gearbox oil for a modified oil that skoda suggest to smooth the box out..

If it is making a rub rub rub noise then get them to do the clutch bearings and possibly look at the box for damage.

I'd get the fault logged in writing now and take out a warrenty direct gold warrenty before your one expired if you are worried.

Update: Its going to the dealers for three days in a few weeks. Have to wait that long to make sure the experienced technicians are not on leave. Keeping my fingers crossed. Also, any repairs will be guranteed for a while as well!

Have you phoned a dealer to see if they can get one. 3 weeks seems like an age.

The time isn't an issue or the parts they can get parts in two days. The problem is them having the two experienced staff on site rather the the 'just qualified' technicians left to the servicing only work. If anything else goes wrong inbetween I'll ask them to take it to there VW branch just around the corner - seeing as under the bonet its the same! In any case I would rather have someone competent doing the work!

The vibration sounds like what I had - DMF shot - took my dealer over 20k's worth mileage/visits before the fault was found because the 1.9 isn't known to have the fault (tho mine did so?????).

UPDATE: Dealer has discovered that the flywheel is not good. Its very early days, but the noise is an early sign of a knackered flywheel and the vibrations ar eslight but noticeable. They are replacing the flywheel and I get a new clutch as well - all under warranty. Its a lease car as well which also helps- but I plan to buy it soon so am glad its happening now!!!

In total I will be using a loan car for 5 or so days!

Good news that they have finally got to the bottom of it.
Quite an expensive set of repairs and it's good it has been done under warranty.

After 8 days in the dealer - my octy is back. I really missed the engine after having a 1.4 petrol and a 1.9 105bhp as a loan car. Anyway all seems to be fine the gear change feels better and I have not heard any grating noise. Althoug, I am nervous, especially when I hear something ut of the ordinary. Lets hope my paranoia goes away soon!! LOL.
