| Re: Octivia Sport 2.0 FSI Admittedly I don't know the diesel but the 2.0FSI is a lovely lump! Getting low 40's mpg on a run, mid 30's otherwise. I run it on 97 |

| Re: Octivia Sport 2.0 FSI Super unleaded. 95 is regular - it runs on that okay, but little bit more zip with 97 or higher if you can get it. The extra cost is offset a bit by slightly higher mpg. I also do low mileage, about 8500 a year now. From what I've heard/seen on this site, I wouldn't touch a diesel with a bargepole when annual mileage so low. | Re: Octivia Sport 2.0 FSI With those kinda yearly mileage figures I'd go for a petrol, as diesels just work better over longer distances etc. Fuel economy won't be that bad anyway especially if you dont cane it all the time. If you hit those miles with infrequent but long trips it may be worth looking at a diesel, but even then I'd probably avoid it. The break-even point would be 5+ years minimum like that so not much value in it for your situation IMHO. The sport may have a slightly harder ride etc. I would highly recommend a test drive of a non-sport and a sport, and see what your personal preference is. It looks nice though

| Re: Octivia Sport 2.0 FSI I have the sport suspension and I find it fine. Theres no getting away from the fact that its sporty and it does crash a little over very rough roads though not so bad it spoils the car. Horses for courses really it depends on your driving style what you choose. Try and get a teat drive in both. Personally I would have the diesel over the petrol any day. I understand the extra outlay for the diesel engine and also your not doing much mileage but IMHO its still the one to go for. According to Autocar magazine the FSI sounds like a diesel when pushed hard. |

| Re: Octivia Sport 2.0 FSI Interesting that. It's when I push it in the gears that it sounds like a V6 four cam to me - nothing like any diesel I've ever heard, not from inside anyway!! Re: the ride, one of the things I noticed in my "normal" FSI is how much easier and softer it is over the cursed speed humps, than my previous Mk.1 vRS. But I don't know enough about these things to know if that is the less "sporty" suspension, or the greatly improved platform. Cornering and general handling is on a different planet to the Mk.1 - much less apparent understeer. |

| Re: Octivia Sport 2.0 FSI I've got the sports suspension with my diesel and I like it. Personally I would just buy the elegance and get the extra sports suspension add on as the sport is too much for what you get and the above works out the same.

| Briskodian | Re: Octivia Sport 2.0 FSI I don't think you can base buying a diesel on just MPG any longer - I know I certainly didn't. I went for the 2.0 TDI Sport because of the in gear performance and the massive torque. MPG was an added bonus to me!! It's a great car to drive - puts a smile on my face - find myself making excuses just to go drive it . Anything I don't like.....? Got an annoying creak coming from around the door area and the jumbo box - especially when in first and second gear - and the door moulds do not seem to be able to take any type of bass from the speakers without vibrating like hell. But - it's still a very enjoyable car to drive. I would recommend it. |

| Re: Octivia Sport 2.0 FSI FSi engines sound a little harsher and more like a diesel because of the way direct injection petrol engines work, it practise it has alot in common with a diesel. |

| Re: Octivia Sport 2.0 FSI I drive around 20K+ miles a year, so went for the diesel. I’ve owned a couple of VAG diesels and have found them very economical (even around 90 mph on the motorway) fairly powerful and slightly rough in sound and vibrations. Overall, I think they are a great engine. VW used to claim that their small diesels were the most thermally efficient mass production engines in the world! But another reason I would go for the diesel (assuming you don’t want an out and out performance engine like the VRs) is it’s inherent advantage when trade in time comes. Although Diesels cost more to buy and in general cost a little bit more to service, they retain a lot more of their purchase price a few years down the road. I haven’t seen any firm predictions for the OctyII, but a major magazine worked out recently that an owner of a Golf TDi would only need to do around 2,000 miles a year, over a 3 year period, to break even financially with an equivalent petrol model. This also applied to the Nissan X-Trail and having sold them, I can say that the Diesel holds it value a lot better than the equivalent petrol model. So in general, it would appear that the Great British public will pay more for a second hand Diesel than a Petrol, so, making your low annual mileage less of a factor than might first appear. Also the Sport suspension debate seems still to rage. I tried both and went for the standard suspension, although the 17” wheels and dropped suspension look fab. A dealer recently told me that if you had the Sport suspension fitted to a ‘Standard’ model, the ride was much more crashy than if you had bought the Sport model with it already fitted. Don’t know how true that is though. I did think that the Sport tramlinned a little bit more than the standard car though. Happy hunting. |
