Question Octy 2.0 TDI likes a drop of oil?

I have had my lovely Oktavia 2.0 TDI for 10 months and it will be 3yrs old in Aug. In that 10 months I've put about 3 litres of oil in her. she has done 35k but I have done 16 of those.
I had a 1.9 TDI before this and I didn't have to touch the oil between services.
Have I got any trouble that requires attention before the warranty runs out?
Lets have your comments please.

Re: Octy 2.0 TDI likes a drop of oil?

My mk1 1.9tdi didn't use any oil , but I had to put just over a litre in the 2.0tdi in it's first 19000 miles.

Since then it hasn't used any. This seems to be normal for the 2.0 but apparantly your oil useage is still within Skoda's spec for the engine

I've just finished off my first litre bottle, and have covered just over 10,000 miles since new.

Re: Octy 2.0 TDI likes a drop of oil?

2.0L TDI 170 (vRS) - I'm using half a litre per 3,000 miles. Topped up twice at 3,000 and 6,000 miles from new. My local dealer, from whom I bought the oil said this was fine and within OEM specification.

It makes sure you check the oil level frequently - which should be done anyway!

I can't complain (at the cost); a few years back I had an Omega TD with the 2.5L BMW engine that drank one litre every 1,500 miles and needed an oil change every 6,000 miles - as per the book!

I have never seen an engine that doesn't use oil. Wonder how they managed to do that... That must require some very special engineering skills.

^^ My 1.9TDI uses about a litre between services, but this doesn't seem to be the norm. I guess every engine is different...? I read somewhere that using a more viscous grade of oil can help reduce usage, but don't have enough knowledge / balls to put that theory to the test...

Re: Octy 2.0 TDI likes a drop of oil?

I've got a 2.0 diesel Astra which used about 1 ltr/4000 miles. It seems to have got better as the mileage has gone up though. It's now on 137,000 miles and using less oil than it did when I got it!

Re: Octy 2.0 TDI likes a drop of oil?

Previously I had a 2.4 V6 Audi A4 and it was using 1lt of oil every 1200 to 1500 miles. According to the handbook, that was perfectly acceptable, but it starts to add up, particulalry when it was the special VW/Audi Castrol stuff at £14 / lt.

A rough calculation suggested that it was equivalent of about 5p extra per litre of fuel or in my case about £140 per year extra running costs. Still, they did supply a nice faux leather, Audi monogrammed pouch for the oil that had a velcro backing that meant it could stick to the carpeted wheel arch in the boot - so I guess that's all right then!

I'm hoping my vRS Tdi will be more parsimonious when it comes to oil.

Re: Octy 2.0 TDI likes a drop of oil?

My 2.0 petrol vRS likes to drink oil, currently about 3/4 of the way through a litre with just over 2500 miles on the clock. Most of my driving is around town, I wonder if it has any effect on oil consumption. I agree about the cost aspect, it ain't cheep oil.

My previous 1.9 TDi I don't think touched a drop between services.

Re: Octy 2.0 TDI likes a drop of oil?

I have used about 1/2 litre in first 6,000 miles which is what I expected, I had a Mark 1 1.9tdi and it was much the same to start with.

Re: Octy 2.0 TDI likes a drop of oil?

Put 1/2L in first 8000k (on first engine) - never had to be topped up after that till turbo smashed engine up at 54k. New engine exactly same, needed top up after approx. 8k, again 1/2L - now done 14k and not topped up since.

Whereas Skoda will give you a Shell branded, err, rubbery zip case for the oil, which also has a velcro backing, 2 gloves (like the sort you get at petrol stations), 2 hand wipes, 2 clothes for mopping up your mess, and 2 cardboard funnels to help you get the oil into the engine without making a mess in the first place.

I have to say, the first Skoda dealer just gave me the oil, but this time I got this pack (although checking the receipts, it was a whole £1.50 more than last time). Well worth it just for the cardboard funnel in my opinion.

Re: Octy 2.0 TDI likes a drop of oil?

1 litre yes.

Permissable limit is 1 litre of oil consumed per 600 miles.

And yes the 2.4 Audi engines were well known for liking a bit of oil.

My engine has done 25,000 miles and seems to like oil more now than previously. Approx 2 litres in 7,500 miles.

Re: Octy 2.0 TDI likes a drop of oil?

Apologies for re-starting this thread, but I'm new here, and thought it best to search to see if oil consumption had been covered before.

My '56' 2.0TDI Octavia loves the stuff - drinks about a litre for every 13k. I was a bit worried about this, but the dealer reckoned I was doing well, they normally use this in 1k!!!

Seeing the previous posts has re-assured me a little, but it isn't cheap is it?!?!

I topped up my vRS TDI with 0.5L at each of 3,000 and 6,000 miles; but it only needed 0.25L at 9,000 miles (last week).

Re: Octy 2.0 TDI likes a drop of oil?

I know the acceptable limits are pretty high but I've never seen anyone here who's car uses a litre for less than several thousand miles.

It's certainly not normal to use a litre every 1k

Re: Octy 2.0 TDI likes a drop of oil?

2.0FSI has used barely measureable oil between annual services, but only about 8.5K a year. Oil is Miller's semi synthetic. Engine very rarely taken over 4000 rpm though.

Re: Octy 2.0 TDI likes a drop of oil?

Well the techs on here say 600 miles per litre is "acceptable" - yours is doing over 4300 miles a litre. Always worst when new, except at end when it's all worn out!

I think oil consumption is directly related to how the car was run in. Give it beans from day one.

Both of our TDI's were driven fairly hard after a few hundred miles and they are doing really well on fuel and oil consumption. The L&K has done just over 11,000 miles and has only required half a litre of oil thus far. The vRS has done 4,000 and hasn't used any.

My previous TDI was run in gently and used about a litre every 3-4k.
