Octy 2.0TDi Recall - Flywheel

Received a letter from Skoda this morning saving they are recalling my Octy because they have established that the flywheel installed in my car (a twin-mass flywheel supplied by a particular manufacturer) may become damaged due to the configuration of the through-flow limiter in the hydraulic pressure line for the clutch. This can lead to failure of the twin-mass flywheel and in unfavourable conditions may cause a fire in the vehicle.

Apparently it will take an hour to check and if an exchange of the flywheel is necessary it will take five hours.

Anyone else received the same letter?

Big old job that to change a flywheel. Bet they don't want to be finding too many of those.

Having a 2.0TDi I'm now worried. Any ideas what cars could be affected?

2.0TDi's first came out Sept/Oct 2004 time so I'm guessing it's only the first few in the country.

Re: Octy 2.0TDi Recall - Flywheel

Just booked it in to Claybank to get it checked and they were aware of the issue, but did say they were telling the Customers as quick as the Dealers.

The letter refers to VOSA saying the request is made under the terms of the code of practice of Vehicle Safety Defects, as is monitored by Dept of Transport

Code is VGS/13C9/1/001

Re: Octy 2.0TDi Recall - Flywheel

A colleague's Audi A3 2.0TDi has just been in for this. They did the inspection a few weeks ago, and then booked it in. I think he said that on the A3 they had to take the gearbox out - anyway, they needed his car in for two days.
Will try to get more details on Monday if anyone wants them, but he's just left to go and pick it up.
Sounds like the same problem (and I guess its the same engine) as he mentioned the fire hazard warning. His A3 was new around July/Aug last year IIRC.

Re: Octy 2.0TDi Recall - Flywheel

So, after the first prob we now have this flywheel prob with the 2.0tdi. Very unlike VAG, but perhaps a sign of corner cutting?

Re: Octy 2.0TDi Recall - Flywheel

The whole VAG stable running the 2.0TDi will be having the same recall, there does seam to be a SMALL number of cars that require flywheel replacement.

The check takes about 30-40 minutes, the vehicle then will either be given a clean bill of health or will require the replacement flywheel.

Re: Octy 2.0TDi Recall - Flywheel

IIRC its only about 1600 of total Octavia 2 TDi production.

Check is dead simple. Even if it needs a flywheel (havent found any on the recall yet) its not a massive job. And as the paperwork says you get plenty of notice should it start playing up with a noticeable noise from the engine/gearbox.

Replacement depends on whether you have a Sachs or Luk Flywheel/Clutch fitted
as Lummox says the check doesn't take long and you get plenty of warning, If...., you have the offending unit fitted.
Our garage has now done three.

Re: Octy 2.0TDi Recall - Flywheel

Are there any noticeable symptoms of this problem?
My 10 month old car has a slight clutch judder on setting off, especially when cold.
Had it checked during service last week but the dealer says its OK and within limits, whatever that means.
To me if it judders somethings wrong, however slight.

Re: Octy 2.0TDi Recall - Flywheel

You do get a little judder on take up of drive, I have noticed this on a fair few Octavia 2's both 1.9 and 2.0.

The fault is more a knocking noise when running.

Re: Octy 2.0TDi Recall - Flywheel

Thanks for the info that is reassuring to know. Unlike Skoda's statement of "in unfovourable conditions may cause a fire in the vehicle" but I suppose they always go for the worse case scenario.

Does this only apply to the 2.0 TDI with manual gearbox or can it also apply to DSG models?

Got my letter on Friday, yet to book it in. Haven't experienced any driveability problems over the last 23k. Mines a 54 plate so relatively early.
