A postnote to anyone who is suffering non-warranty covered DMF problems like me, (there are several threads about this, so apologies to anyone who read this elsewhere!), found out Valeo make "4 piece clutch kits" to replace clutch & DMF, they reckon it is both cheaper & more durable. No idea if this is true though & not sure of model availability!
Will let you know as my Mondeo DMF is up to 8k miles now and therefore must be knackered by now!!

I have the Octavia Estate 1.9 4x4 - 15200 miles on clock.

When I detected a knocking sound from the engine I went immediately to the garage where the fault was identified as the flywheel problem.

It was necessary to replace the flywheel & clutch. Job completed in one day. If not under warranty this repair would have cost £568.00p

There are many more satisfied owners than the few with issues that post on here, most normal people will only look for a forum if they have a problem they want advice on. There are some like me who have had a skoda since 2001, who at the time was looking for advice, and have been here ever since.

My 2.0TDI now with 29K miles on the clock, has not had any issues with the DMF or clutch. I bought the car last september and am racking up the mileage nicely, due to cover 1100 miles this week, 400 so far.

Just found your website. I am (still!) a Toyota RAV4 owner, the D4D diesel. I've just had the flywheel and clutch replaced, unfortunately just outside warranty and the bill was eye-watering. If you check the Toyota Owners Club website you'll find dozens of similar sad postings. It seems someone(?) developed a flywheel - the dual mass flywheel - as the answer to diesel torque and it has proved only too susceptible to damage. I had a brief test drive recently in an Octavia 4x4 estate, 2.0 TDi and was very impressed but my experience with the RAV makes me think I'll go for the petrol engined version. Toyota RAV's with petrol engines don't seem to suffer the flywheel problem as they have a different flywheel design.

If I do opt for the diesel Octavia 4x4 I'll take out an extended warranty if it covers flywheel replacement, otherwise it's the 2.0 petrol.

I'm told the new RAV4 diesels have a different design of flywheel so it seems Toyota recognize there is a problem but have preferred to keep quiet about it.

Well just had my 33thousand service....Yup i need another new flywheel!!! I cannot believe it!! From the new fabia advert i wonder if the flywheel is made from marzipan!!!! (also needed new electric winder actuator and motor!!!)
Getting nervous towards end of warrenty !!!

Hi, like Andy2407 a mate of mine had this recall on his 2004 Audi A3 this was mid last year. His car was found to have the fault, resulting in the flywheel being replaced, the car had done just over 40K. At the time I asked my local dealer if my Octavia was likely to be affected, but they had no information from Skoda that there would be a problem with the Octavia.

I just my third new flywheel and clutch assembly fitted on Friday.

All fine until the weather warmed up yesterday, Saturday, drove 10 miles and got the same grinding rattling noises as before.

As stated elsewhere in the thread, the dealer has not yet heard this noise. Sods law, doesnt do it when the car goes in.
Definitely seems to be connected to heat, either hot weather or lots of clutch work in traffic.
Strangely there is no sign of any damage/ribbing to anything when they take it to bits but it sounds like the engine is falling apart when it happens.

Why the hell VW group havent given up on the DMFs and reverted to fitting ordinary flywheels beats me.

The dealer is very helpful and so far all work is under warranty even though its done 68k.

The dealer says it seems to be a growing problem and has even fitted new kit to some of their demo cars.

I have just requested an octavia 2.0l tdi pd elegance as my next company car.
Im now concerned after reading this thread.
Can I expect the flywheel problem to happen on a new car, surley this problem has now been sorted out?

What I dont understand is after a car has been recalled and new parts fitted the replacement flywheels are failing?
What is actually going wrong with them?

Got a call last week from my dealer to say my 2006 1.9 Ambiente estate which I bought in June, needed to have flywheel and clutch replaced. Took it in yesterday and they had it all done and dusted by 4p.m. They appear to have done a good job and it was under warranty. As I'd thought it only applied to 2.0TDi models I'd never given it any consideration, so all credit To Rainworth Motors for their continued customer service. They lent me a 1.4 TDi Roomster whilst mine was in - lovely little car but not what I'd buy.

had to have my flywheel repalced last year on my 1.9, after 5000 miles, heard they are remapping the tourque curve to stop the vibration!

My 1.9 TDI, took delivery 1 Sept 2004, shot its flywheel in late August 2007, fortunately just within warranty period. Car had some 41,000 miles on the clock.

No recall notice received.

Well lordy lordy. Herselfs '05 plate PD decided to stop at 0520 this morning on a country lane whilst she was on her way to work. Just a month after the turbo failed.
It was dragged to the nearest dealers and lo and behold, the dual mass flywheel is bolloxd. As is the g'box casing and probably the g'box as well.
Plenty of boxes in the country, but NO casings.
Pants customer service at 0800 in the dealership as well, but a lot better after I growled at them.

Joined this in the hope of getting some answers to a serious problem..Theres loads of info but nothing that answers my question directly..I drive an A5 octavia 1.9tdi.At 51000miles the dual mass flywheel was replaced and now at only 56000 miles its gone again.This time they are also replacing the starter motor and gear kno8. As the warranty runs out in december,will my new flywheel be covered with any warranty??..Im lookin to buy a new car shortly and the Octavia was top of my list but if they are still fitting these faultly (maybe not the correct word) flywheels,is it worth it..The dealer has told me he hasnt had any problems recently with the flywheels so it may have just been a faulty batch..I know of four other local Octavia owners who have suffered the same problems although none of them have suffered it twice..
Have SKODA cured this problem with the new cars they sell?

Stuff it.....changed the car last week for a brand new Octavia..("I'm gonna make you an offer you cant refuse" chirped the salesman).Rear window wiper packed in 14 miles from the show room,but at least the dual mass flywheel isnt rattling about tearing the cr4p outta the gearbox and starter motor...And my car hasn't burst into flames....most be one of the lucky ones.
Pound for pound, they're a great car.Warts and all.

Hmmm, my 1.9 TDI 56 reg with just 12400 miles is starting to develop a shudder at biting point in 1st & 2nd gear!!

Got mine new, 2.0TDi, September 06, but manufactured August 05. It has 15.000km now.
Please, anybody, should I be worried about flywell?
By VIN Nº I understood it got out of factory August 2005.
Should I go to dealer and ask about recall?

Just booked my 07 2.0 TDI L&K in for next week due to shuddering on biting point in the mornings, looks like they haven't resolved this on the later models either

I have just ordered a new Octy and I am annoyed beyond belief that this flywheel issue has not been resolved. It must be costing Skoda a small fortune in warranty work and knocking back Skoda's reliability image.
In all the years of running VW Boras with what I imagine to be the same running gear I have never had a problem- clutch, flywheel or gearbox. I am seriously considering kicking the deposit into touch and sticking with the old reliable current Bora.

Any comments chaps......

Same here - 1.9 TDI, 56 reg, 11500 miles.

Pulling away at low revs in first/second causes a judder...goes away once the car is above approx 2000 rpm.
If i come to the bite at higher revs its ok.

Is this the DMF problem beginning, or something different? Thanks.

sounds likle the DMF but might be something else, get the dealer to check it for you

Just had my DMF replaced under warranty but I still have a notchy 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd gear change any ideas? They only replaced the flywheel saying the clutch looked like new

The dealer in milton keynes will not replace my DMF until it gets worse, wil have another go while car in for service in 2 weeks time, they got car for 2 days & its worse when cold.
