I'm taking my interest in the Octavia Scout a bit further and would like to know if those that have bought already are generally happy.

Engine wise I am interested in the Diesel, any problems flagged up on this engine?

Any general driving niggles or faults I should know about?

What are the must have options to go for?

Hi there

Don't have a Scout but do have a 4x4 (which I believe is the same without some extras). Its a 140 bhp diesel.

Had a couple of month its fine, no problems, not even a small rattle or squeek.

Handles nicely as well - for its setup. Diesel is alittle rattly especially when cold but I guess this is a VAG thing having come from smoother BMW diesels.

Hi Pixi,

Go for the xenons as they are worth £495 or whatever the price is now & remember the curtain airbags as they are not standard - otherwise pretty much well specced as standard (unless you can afford the built in Sat Nav). If your buying new you can certainly persuade the dealers to throw in little options like the variable boot floor too as this has come in handy a number of times.

Diesels good enough, like Ham said it's a little rattly on cold mornings but doesn't take long to quieten down - got enough poke in it to keep up with the rest of the sheeple!

I may have a suspect steering rack problem which isn't unique to the Scout but across the VAG Golf platform (do a search here or see one of my recent posts).

There are some great 2nd hand buys at the moment - just shop around & you can save yourself £3000.00 over new if you don't mind someone else who has put 5000 miles on it before you do!!

Like ham 888 we also have 4x4 ours is the 1.9tdi pd only 6weeks in use, concur about the rattle in the mornings, in snow/ ice great, no problems.

I've owned/driven a few diesels so the cold start rattling is not an issue for me I think the Scout uses a 2.0l engine?

Scout does use the 2.0 tdi engine
So your letting Mr P have your VRS and you commandeering the new Scout then Pixi
Would be quite rare on the island

Generaly pretty good, the odd one or two 140's have had turbo issues but you'll have a warranty. I actually quite like them, I htink they look purposeful on the road.

Mr P would most definetely not be having my vrs, it would be used as trade in against a 2nd hand, unless the prices were silly for new. He has just got in from work and the conversation went like this.....

Me - What do you think about me trading in my car for an Octavia Scout, you remember the one from the car show?

Him - Yeah, nice. Guess what Church street are doing at the moment? (motorcycle shop).....and goes on to tell me that they are doing 0% on new bikes including the CBR600F.

So that's about how interested my husband is in cars - 0%

Because if Mr P gets a bike you will be down to one car to do all those things you do with two cars, So your only car needs to be pratical enter the Scout

Just for interest, pic's show our 4x4 Ambient 1'9tdi pd alongside a Scout at our main dealers workshop. Notice sump guards and tail pipes differ,and more plastic on the Scout and extra lights on the rear. Also fog lights are round on the Scout and there is slightly more ground clearence . Believe wheels are also 16s on the Scout to 15s on our 4x4. Hope that helps you and anyone who may not have seen both side by side.

btw the scout has 17 inch wheels, higher clearance, extra lower reflectors aka vrs style, hill hold control and other bits. the scout is the one to go for imoa. but we run a 1.9tdi 4x4 and although it could do with a bit more poke (2.0tdi would be much better) its quite well stocked with features and drives brillaintly! in the older mk1 octy, ive heard people tuning the 1.8t version up very nicely without any power train problems

very pleased with my scout, no faults yet, multifuntion steering wheel is a must,and i also had sat nav,try and negotiate with dealer for extras such as boot liner and roof bars as these are expensive as i found out if you by later,mine is anthrasite and diesel, happy shopping.

I had a new clutch and flywheel at 5k miles. There was a bit of a knocking noise from new and I was waiting for the relevant part to give up or bed in. It gave up resulting in no drive. Joy.

Apart from that no probs and after 12k miles engine is a lot more responsive and excellent to drive.

If you go for Xenon lights be prepared to be flashed constanly. I also get lots of people pulling over to let me pass at night for no apparent reason...

Have done just shy of 3000 miles in our Scout now, having picked it up in late October. Fuel economy was ok when new and even better now the engine is loosening up. Managed an indicated 47+mpg on the way home from Slough to Gatwick today at around 50mph (traffic). Recently drove to the French Alps for a ski break with the family and was getting 38+mpg with 2 adults, 2 kids, all the luggage for a week and at 100-ish mph.

The 4x4 system is superb, coping with the snow and ice without a hitch. Comfort wise, I drove for something like 10 hours to make our train on the way back from the Alps with only 2 x 20 minute breaks, with no one complaining and I WAS able to walk when I got out of the car

All in all we are VERY pleased with the car. It has exceeded our expectations in every way. The only thing that niggles at the moment is that the dash-top storage compartment comes open when you breathe on it, so nothing much in the negative. Oh, and they are a bugger to get snow chains for.

For info, the Scout is 17mm higher ride-wise than the 4x4.

Spoke to everyone and when you give the tyre size they say there's no clearance and chains are not suitable - with the exception of the ones that just fit on hte mid to outside of the tyres (£175+ jobbies). Even Rud, manufacturers support, looked into it for me and said they copuldn;t supply or recommend any.

Have Autosocks now anyway, but didn't need them as the car was so good in the ice and snow.

For the last 6 months or so I've been pretty set that my replacement car will be an Octy Scout. I am in a position where a vehicle with raised ground clearance, four wheel drive and some off road ability would be perfect. However I'm not interested in paying to push a brick through air all the times that I am on road. Looking to change some time later this year.

Seemed an easy choice as no other "Crossover" Estate would come close for value for money (Volco XC70 and Audi Allroad are £30k+ machines) or fuel economy, until I read this and started thinking that a Diesel Outback (which will be available from March) might be just as good if not better.......

The Outback looks a serious contender as a diesel.

I would leave it a few months though. The VW 1.9 and 2.0 TDI units are reasonably bomb-proof, but an innovative lightweight boxer diesel sounds like a recipe for a load of early life reliability issues to sort out.

Otherwise sounds like a great engine though - low CO2 compared with the Scout.
