| Octy tyre wear On my journey home from work tonight I started to get a banging/knocking noise from the NSF. The TPM was not lit but thought I better stop and check the tyres. The nsf tyre appeared to be inflated ok and the visible tread was a couple of mm above the wear bar but on running my hand over the tyre surface was surprised to find that the inside couple of inches of the tyre appeared to be shredded with the metal banding flailing about. Drove slowly to the nearest Tyre depot and had them check - both front tyres, Dunlop Sport 01a 225, 45, 17 were down to the carcase on the inside couple of inches. Got them to replace both - (only had Bridgstones in stock) and check the tracking. They found the tracking was only slightly out and said it was not out enough to cause this sort of wear pattern and should get the dealer to check the suspension set up. Got first service booked for a week on Saturday and will mention it then but has anyone else had a similar happening? The Octy is a 2.0 tdi with sports suspension and DSG and has now done 17100 since July 05 p.s. I do have to negotiate about 30 roundabouts a day on my jouney to and from work -( thats Milton Keynes for you) could it be this that has caused it? (I don't hang about and do tend to take them quite quickly) ![]() |

| Re: Octy tyre wear I had a similar problem, first noticed when the steering felt rather 'vague'. I had the tracking re-set ("I was told that it was quite a way out)" , new front tyres and it appears to heve been OK since (about 6,000 miles ago) |

| Briskodian | Re: Octy tyre wear No tyres shouldn't wear down to their carcuses ever as long as you check them regulalry you shouldn't get this sort of wear in a short time.

| Briskodian | Re: Octy tyre wear Noticed over the weekend that the inners on my front tyres had worn considerably more than the outers. 12mths, 12500 miles (not driven hard) 225,45 17 Dunlop tyres. Had tracking checked on a laser alignment system with no error found (so no charge=bonus). Booked in next week with Skoda for investigation. |

| Re: Octy tyre wear I know this is a daft question, but did you check your tyres pressures on delivery of the vehicle?. Reason I ask is that when I got mine they were over inflated by a considerable margin and if left unaltered may cause the kind of tyre wear you describe!.

Mine was also a little high, but after hearing one of the lads say the one Octy RS handle better than the new one I suspected pressures too high, they were at 45 PSI , obviously his opinion of the handling changed after that.

| Briskodian | Re: Octy tyre wear Has anyone found a cause of this tyre wear? I did not think my tyres were worn badly until parked on full lock. I noticed the inside 25mm of tread has worn away, worse on the driver side but still bad on passenger side. The car is a 1.9 4x4 estate mk2 and has covered 16000 miles. The rest of the tyre has 5mm of tread. |

| Briskodian | Despite there being on fault found on mine at the independant workshop, when the main stealer took it to their 'trusted garage' they found that the front tracking was significantly out. They have set it up now so I will have to monitor the wear rate. I am still concerned though as the car has not been thrashed over rough roads or kerbed so how the 'large errors' occurred in 12mths/13k miles is a mystery to me. I don't seem to be alone with this problem so can anyone more mechanically minded suggest why this tracking error would occur over such a short time/distance?? | Briskodian | Re: Octy tyre wear My octy 2 (tdi sport) had around 12,000 miles on when I bought it ex demo, now has a little under 14,000 on and all 4 tyres are bald... silly me didn't check them when I bought the car just assuming that a reputable skoda dealers demo car should be ok. am I right in thinking that if the rear tyres are looking bald with this millage then they have probably be swapped round at some point? if thats the case I'll be contacting the garage as this combined with the cluth that failed the day I picked the car up would suggest that someone has not been taking care of it.... Absolutely gutted about having to replace 4 tyres after 1 1/2 months of ownership as its likely to cost me about £400 which I just dont have ![]() Anyone have any ideas what would be good (good price good wear good handling) tyres to replace the normal ones with? I had thought about michelins as I get a great price on them from Costco

| Re: Octy tyre wear I have a 4x4 TDI and the rears are wearing qicker than the fronts, not uneven just simply wearing quicker - why? even Skoda dont know!! |

| Briskodian | Re: Octy tyre wear I decided to swap the front with the rear tyres on my 4x4 TDI due to the front tyres wearing badly on the inside tread. When I inspected the rear tyres they have worn so that the outer has about 2mm less tread than the inner, although this wear is across the whole width of the tyre as opposed to the front which is allthe inner 25mm of tread. As this is the opposite to the wear on the front it may prolong the life of the tyres although I will being buying four at the same time. I wonder if the raised suspension on the 4x4 causes a change in the geometry compared to the standard suspension. |

| Briskodian | Re: Octy tyre wear Are they toeing the camber at the rear to get better grip? Some car makers do this by design, and while you get better grip you do wear the tyres quicker.

| Briskodian | Re: Octy tyre wear I reckon it's speed 'pillows' to blame. My two nearside tyres had bad inner shoulder wear, had to replace the rear. One was 4yrs old, the other less than a year (I do about 7,000miles a year). The only thing that's changed on my drive to work in the last year is the building of the damned speed bumps. Now I try not to straddle them, but that's probably going to bugger the suspension eventually. http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/faq.htm?id=62 |

| Briskodian | Re: Octy tyre wear I had a problem with the front tyres,1.9tdi, tyre depot said it was caused by the wheel alignment totally out.Inside front, worn to canvas inside edge for 3/4 inch, outside front worn similarly but on the outside of tyre.Had car laser lined front to rear and toe in etc.Found engine sub chassis out, re aligned eng sub chassis and lo and behold all was lined up again.Suggest it could be the sleeping police men causing this type of damage but cant be sure.Well worth having the alignment checked. |

| Exactly as on mine: 2 new fronts after 15K miles, very badly worn on inside edge of both(below TWI), one illegal. Car sent for tracking & whell alignment: not an easy job on the Mk II; all four wheels need doing at once, apparently. No Skoda dealers locally could do it, so off to Listers in Coventry (VW dealer), all under warranty: now sorted. Michelins showing minimal wear after 12K miles on front: original (NOISY!!!) Dunlop SP Sports still on rear after 27K miles. As previous posts have said, it's vital to check tire wear every couple of thousand miles or so to spot if this is happening. |

| Briskodian | Re: Octy tyre wear My 1 year old Octavia 18,000 miles had its first service today. Both front tyres illegal as inner 25mm worn down. I was told I need to have the tracking laser aligned. They also tried to download a software update to the radio and that has now failed. Replacement on order. The low tone horn and the mirror indicator repeater assembly are also faulty. Parts also ordered for my leaking passenger door. I am not impressed with my Skoda! Can any of you recommend a Laser wheel alignment company in Sussex or nearby. Thanks Graham |

| Briskodian | Re: Octy tyre wear Hi folks thanks for the comments re tyre wear, as I said the prob was inside front inside front was worn on the inside, the drivers side was worn on the outside as if the front suspension was leaning to the kerb. I took the car to a firm who checked the alignment from front to rear and the toe in/out.The problem was caused by the engine sub frame being moved to the right. After loosening and "springing" the sub frame back to where it should be.Then alignment check was good.I don't know what caused it but it cost me a new set of treads. Also, I had this done in Holland and the laser alignment cost me £50,well worth it. My latest prob with a 2.0v140 bhp tdi L& K octy is that around 40 to 50 mph i get what can only be described as wheel imbalance.I had the rears balance checked and 1 was out of balance. After re-balance it made no difference, the vibes were still there. It is noisier inside and wonder if it is caused by an out of true disc.mileage is 6400miles.If it was a disc I would expect some feedback through the brake pedal when braking.Any ideas? Car is only 6 months old. |

![]() Regarding the ballancing issue, i spent a year (literally) trying to work this out including lots of ballancing by various places including main dealers. Go find a good local tyre specialist who will do fingerplate balancing. This mimics the wheel being against the hub of the car when blanacing it. I had 35g out on one wheel even though another place had just said no it's just fine.
