All torque

Im posting this on behalf of my father-in-law. Its a 06 Octy Vrs with 6k on the the clock. The problem hes having is the petrol gauge sometimes wont work. It just sits on empty. Its done it 5 times now in a year.

Can anybody suggest what the problem could be and whats involved in fixing, ie garage job or not

Hi...That happens with our Pool car (1.9tdi Octy) Only tends to happen after being in stop start traffic for a period of time! If you flick the ignition on and off again, it sorts itself out. Was going to point it out at the next service.

If anyone has any answers for this, might be interesting.

I know it is not a solution; but meanwhile you can use the 'Range' function on the Computer/MFD, so you know how much further you can go.

I have found this to be very accurate.

Thats what I thought when someone at work mentioned it to me but that shows up as "---" so the only cure is to turn ignition on and off.

Not my car so not bothered, but would be interesting to know if it is a common problem.

So both the Petrol guage AND the range function pack up at the same time?

Not necessarily. In fact, I'd say that the range function is working properly. If the gauge is telling the trip computer there's no fuel in the car, then wouldn't you expect it to indicate "--" (since range = present consumption multiplied by fuel remaining)?

Like i said, its intermittent and only happens after stop start traffic. Not worth the effort till the next service. Like I said its a Pool car...which gets abused! I think a dodgy fuel gauge will be the last of its worries when it's 3 years are up.

I had this exact problem in the Leon but only after filling the petrol tank to the max. It would also go to zero and show -------. The first time I actually saw the fuel gauge go to zero and almost had a heart attack. Knowing that I had just refilled and seeing no massive pool next to the car, I knew it was a meausurement problem. Never got it fixed since it didn't happen that often and wasn't that bothered.

Also depends if it actually shows any fault codes...as would be v difficult to reproduce.

I would suggest that it sounds like the tank sender unit or the wiring to it that is at fault.

Me too.

On my Mk 1 I had this happen a few times over 3 years. Put it down to a vaccum in the tank, or another think on the Mk1 was that when you opened the filler cap the range went to ---- and the fuel gauge went a little screwy for a moment.

Accidentally knocked the release button once when on the motorway, didn't realise, and thought I had a hole in the tank!!!

My 2.0TDI does the same. The guage just drops to zero ans I loose the range indicator. My best guess is the sender unit. I was going to wait until the next service but it's getting more frequent so I think I'll be off to the dealer shortly!
