'Service Now' message at 5,000 miles?!

Hi guys, Im after some advice on my MY08 Petrol VRS.

When I picked the car up I was told that it had been setup for fixed annual servicing. After taking advice from here I decided to ask the local dealer to change this setting to 'variable.

When you held in the trip reset button and started the car; I always got the time until the next service was due, however it always seemed a very low number (around 8,500 miles when the car had only so far done 1,000!)

I checked the remaining mileage just last weekend, thinking that it would adjust to the variable setting and give me a truer, higher reading. However, upon checking I get the message 'SERVICE NOW'.

The car currently has 5k on the clock (5 months old); stating the obvious but surely it isnt really requiring a £200 trip to the dealer already?!

Would I get any further indication if the car 'really' needed its first service.

Any advice greatfully received.

Lee

Same thing happened with mine... they "forgot" to reset the service indicators

Take it in to your dealers and they'll sort it for you.

Agreed, there is no way your car should need servicing after just 5,000miles. If you're on variable (all new cars leave the factory on this servicing schedule) expect a first service somewhere around the 15,000 mile mark, give or take a few thousand miles.

Re: 'Service Now' message at 5,000 miles?!

Cheers guys.

When I picked the car up - the dealers said they change the VRS to fixed (even though it still has the 'variable' factory oil in there still!) After seeking advice here I decided that was over the top and just guessing I'd say they do it so you see them sooner, therefore more income maybe?

Local dealer disagreed and leave all their cars on variable as set from the factory.

I'll drop my local dealer a call tomorrow.

Cheers chaps.

Re: 'Service Now' message at 5,000 miles?!

I've had the same problem, but the fault was mine:
I was looking at the trip computer the wrong way, the way you say: "Hold the button and then start the car...", and having "Service now" message.

Now I use the other way and everything seems fine:
1) Fasten the seatbelt
2) Turn the ignition on (don't start the car)
3) Hold the trip/reset button untill message appears.

Try it, it may work for you as it worked for me.

Using this exact method displays that I have 5200 miles or 200 something days left. Not sure what i did wrong previously but I now feel more comfortable with that.

Thanks (and sorry for the false alarm!)

Happy to hear your problem was solved. And, don´t be sorry. Ivé done exactely the same mistake using trip computer and almost went to dealer to ask what was going on. It was this forum that adviced me to do a reading the other way and now it works fine. Then I've checked owner's manuals and there it says exactely the way this forum was saying. So, as a conclusion, I think I'm too samrt and don't need owner's manual. Lesson learned and now whenever there is doubt I forst look for the answer in manuals and just then, if there was no answer, I ask others or go to a dealer. I don't want to be ashamed by a dealer asking "Have you looked at the owner's manuals?".

Question Re: 'Service Now' message at 5,000 miles?!

Now I'm confused!!

My Octavia II (2.0TDI L&K) is fast approaching 2 years old and 18,000 miles, and I've yet to see the "Service Now" indicator. I was wondering if it was actually working!

But if you press the trip reset button as described don't you just reset the trip odometer?

Re: 'Service Now' message at 5,000 miles?!

To answer my own question...

OK so the answer is that you hold the button in to get the servicing information!

Mine tells me I'll need my first service in 1300 miles or 38 days (that's 18500 miles and 2 years 2 weeks from new)!

Re: 'Service Now' message at 5,000 miles?!

Having looked at this Forum regardind next service on variable i followed the sequence and got 6500 miles to go which would make 15000 miles to that service, however what does the 13.5 mean at the side of the mileage?.
