Should this happen?

As I was leaving the car park at work I noticed something I'm not sure about.
If I select first gear and take my foot off the clutch my car doesn't stall, it keeps moving. Only very slowly, but enough to make it up a gentle gradient and over a small speed bump. It does it on start up and when the engine has been warmed up. The car is not audibly 'hunting' but the reves show a minor fluctuations around 7500. I am not sure exactly what revs should show at idle but I didn't thingk the needle should move at all until the accelerator is pressed.
The whole effect reminded me of my first car with a manual choke which when pulled out very slightly allowed the car to move forward on its own.
The car has done about 1200 mile from new and has been run exclusively on Shell 'V Power'.

Is this an ECU problem, as it was in a much more extreme form on another car I owned, a Pug 106 Ralle? Or is it 'supposed' to do this?

sounds about right - apart from the "minor fluctuations around 7500"

The reason it doesn't stall is that there is enough torque to get the car rolling.

I think it's perfectly normal to have a slight fluctuation in revs at idle, after all the engine is being controlled by the ECU which reacts to the feedback from sensors and makes adjustments accordingly.

You have a vRS TDI, don't you?

Seems normal to me.

With careful clutch control you can start in 2nd with the engine just on 'tickover'. If you're in a traffic jam, the car will 'drive itself' at c. 8mph in 2nd.

Its like having an 'anti-stall' function in the ECU.

I've got the petrol vRS, if that makes a difference......?
I did wonder about the ECU allowing a bit of 'play' to the front wheels and whether this was deliberate

Now I only need to chase up the dealer about my still not closing properly passenger door and its 'floral' hologram marks in the paint!

Inccidently, I changed over my insurance company yesterday, from Zurich, who were wanting to renew my policy for a mentalist £940 premium. When I cancelled I spoke to a nice chap who has a Subaru. He was really interested in the vRS and commented about how good the ECU unit is. Possibly the best one out there at the moment! He also told me to watch the tracking on my wheels. When he had had uneven wear and wanted to change the brand of tyres on his car he was told by the indep tyre specialist that if they fitted anything other than the originally tested and specd tyres it would require a disclaimer to be signed as some insurance companies can be a bit funny apparently. His Subaru had come with 'track' type tyres and he was advised he would need to stick with that specific tyre. Not sure this applies to us but interesting none the less. He was really enthusiastic about the vRS......nice to hear!

Sounds normal to me.

BTW, the ECU does have an "Anti-Stall" feature. Its no infallible, but it will increase Injection values if it senses a stall scenario.

Almost all cars are capable of this if you are carefull on the clutch, petrol or deisel. My old furby vrs could do it in 4th on he flat!!

Thanks again for the replies....very reassuring, noticed today that on start up the car revs at about 10,000 as I 'cruise' with the car in gear and accelerator not depressed. Once car is warmer it performs the same feat at about 7500.
Great to hear all is normal!

Mitchel's Skoda have booked me in for next friday to sort out my door paint and they will check the poor closing of the door too. I did have to ring them to remind them but Tom was really helpful. If this positive experience of dealer and car continues I will find it hard to buy any other make of car! Wonder what a Mark 3 will be like?
