Shuddering from the rear...

At around 16k miles my Octavia started to develop a shudder from the back wheels. I took it into Skoda and they could find nothing wrong and to be honest weren't completely interested in looking. After further investigation we found it to be the rear tyres not wearing evenly and putting it down to bad luck I shelled out £400 on four new tyres.

I get the tracking sorted every few months, but we are now about 16k miles on and the shudder is coming back. I took it back to Skoda who again were not interested in coming out for a test drive but just told me to have all 4 wheels tracked not just the front ones as it was probably just mis-alignment and causing un-even wear. I took the car to the garage that my local skoda garage uses for 4 wheel alignment only to be told that although the fronts weren't perfect, the back wheels were spot on aligned.

This can only mean that the car itself has caused the tyres to not wear correctly (bridgestone I think were on it from day 1, then I had Avon put on it after the first problem).

Has anyone else had anything like this? There should be no way it should go through a rear set of tyres in 16k miles and I am not particularly in the mood for spending £400 a year on tyres!

The skoda engineer mentioned "possibly" the suspension could have problems and I'll admit I do get odd noises from the back suspension on bumps, but this is only when the back seats are up, all is ok when they are down.

Any thoughts gratefully received. I will be going back to Skoda with the alignment proof and a sterner demand to get them to take a test drive!

cheers

Octavia-vRS.com - Octavia A5 Common or Known Problems and Issues

There is a known issue with rear camber, described up there on Stu's page.

Re: Shuddering from the rear...

An update which may help others. I got the car 4 wheel aligned and they showed it to be correct, however on comparing it with the notes above from Stu, they had the old figures! Anyhow, took it back to my local Skoda garage (Bedford garage) and although I will slate poor service, I will also praise good service. I spoke with James, one of their technicians and he was fantastically helpful and explained that Skoda isn't obliged to pass alignment settings to third party garages, however he would take the new figures to the garage himself to update them and that the work I have had to had done on the car, I should be able to claim under a warranty. He was happy to compare figures for the car's current setup and how it should be according to the latest Skoda figures and it is booked in to get it all sorted and back to how it should be. Couldn't have been more helpful! Top marks.

Next thing is to try to get Skoda to replace the tyres under the warranty asthis is the second time this has happened and the second time I have gone in to complain about it. The new camber figures have been out since Nov 05, so this should have been picked up first time round.

cheers for your help
