| Briskodian | Skoda safety This is my 1st post here and unfortunately it's a bitter-sweet one. i drove my brand new Oct II 1.6 mpi (candy white) out of the dealers lot on September 15th this year. On December 25th at 1140pm local time i was hit head-on by an old Nissan 120Y (solid metal). i slowed to get thru a rough patch in the road and he came around the bend at about 130km/h and.... bang! my octavia absorbed the full force of the other car's momentum. the air-bag inflated and i immediately exited the vehicle. the rest is blurry.... i got minor head and chest pains from the air bag and a scratch on my arm. the driver of the other car was found in the back seat of his car.... sadly he only lived for another 6 hours after the impact... God rest his soul! as i've never posted in a forum before i will attempt to attach some photos..... i've already decided to purchase another octavia!!! |

| Re: Skoda safety Welcome to the forum! Not a great start to Skoda ownership, but it does show how well modern cars stand up to even quite severe impacts. Was the car written off because it was so new, or because of the extent of the damage? Oh, and when does the new one arrive? ![]() Chris

It was written off because of what it will cost the insurance company to get the parts in from europe to the Caribbean (Trinidad to be exact)... i'll sell the salvage to the firm... my skoda sales rep has already volunteered to buy it.... new one will be ready by 2nd week in January.... ps my mom and several of the managers at the local Johnson and Johnson are currently driving Octavia II cars... | |

| Re: Skoda safety Welcome aboard, I wish it was under better circumstances. It's good news the car did it's job and saved your life thanks to it's safety systems but a rather sad ending for the other poor chap Just goes to show what modern engineering is all about.

| Re: Skoda safety Welcome to forum and welcome to your second life. I've always trusted german engineering and this time it had proven itself once more. Your post and photos prove to me once more that I have to stick with VAG.

| Re: Skoda safety Just before Christmas we got an unexpected invitation to a neighbour's for drinks. He is the guy who sat in my Octy when it was new and went straight out to buy one for himself, about 18 months ago. I asked him how he was enjoying it. He told me when it was less than 3 months old, he fell asleep at 2am and hit a tree. Total write off of course but he was barely bruised. (He had it on one of those insurances where you get a brand new replacement with no depreciation costs). He said the police told him he was only alive because of the qualities of the Octy [which was the 140bhp diesel estate]. So, if you're going to hit anything, best buy a Skoda! |

| Briskodian | Re: Skoda safety Welcome to the forums! glad you are OK it's never nice being involved in a car accident but VW's have always been sturdy cars and Skoda were quite literally in the business of making tanks so the end result is one strong car (thanks to my friends dodgy guidance I once slowly backed into and pushed over a low, brick, garden wall in my furby resulting in slight scratch marks to the rear bumper!! (no joke, I suspect the wall was rotten anyhow) |

| ECUless | Re: Skoda safety Glad that you are OK, looks like the car took that quite well, it's a shame about the other driver, it sounds as though the situation was beyond your control and that there was nothing that you could have done. We had an Octavia I in the other day, the driver was doing 20mph and a child stepped out right in front of it and went straight under the car, luckily he wasn't seriously hurt. We had to check the car underneath for any signs of damage. What was immediately apparent was that the engine undertray saved him, it deflected him downwards and away from any sharp bits under the car, if it had,nt been there he would have been caught between the engine and the radiator and dragged along the road. And there was me thinking that they were just a pain to remove and refit everytime that you need to do some work from underneath. There's a catalogue here, but it doesn't look as though it lists Octavia II parts. Online spareparts catalogue for AUDI/Volkswagen/Skoda/Seat Another one here, don't know how legal it is or wether it is time limited trial. Skoda Electronic Parts Catalogue (ETOS) |
