Re: steering rack noise

Holding any P/S fully over for any length of time is supposed to do damage isn't it?
At least that is what I've always seen in numerous owners' handbooks!

Re: steering rack noise

Not so much on full-lock but mine creaks as I turn left at low speed, it also only seems to be there when the air temp is cold?
Really strange problem, sounds like its generating from a steering servo or something, anyway getting it checked out this week.

AFAIK it was a fault with them and they were being replaced under warranty. It was on a 2006 garage car I drove, the car was only a couple of days old too.

Re: steering rack noise

The dealer can read a number off the rack (MBV 80 iirc) this will tell them if its in the effected range of steering racks.

Lummox,

I've been reading a little about this from previous posts & just wanted to know if it is this 'common' steering rack issue that also effects Golf mk5/Leon etc... is it a big job? What is involved - the whole steering rack replaced or the servo/motor?
Just to be more precise - the noise can only be described as a 'creaking' sound & only present when actually turning the steering wheel left, the noise stops when you stop turning the wheel so is also NOT present when on full left lock. The noise also seems to be coming from behind the glove box area & sounds like an electric motor/mechanical sound (hard to describe). I can also confirm that this is only audible when it is cold outside (below 10deg). I just know that when it goes in again this week, the dealer will not be able to pick it up because the weather is getting warmer!

Thanks, W.
