Question Stone chip on windscreen

Having finally washed my car today for the first time in ages I now notice that I have a very small chip on the windscreen.

I seem to remember that these could be repaired. Is this the case? The windscreen isn't cracked and the chip is tiny but it's just that it's in my eye line.

Re: Stone chip on windscreen

Yep, and I wouldnt wait long. You can get kits from petrol stations sometimes, or Halfords or similar places. Well worth doing

Re: Stone chip on windscreen

Get it done FOC by an approved repairer such as Autoglass etc. Shouldnt hurt your insurance and they are usually lurking in retail parks offering a While U wait type service, they will be all over the place during the bank holiday weekend.

Re: Stone chip on windscreen

FOC = Free Of Charge

Good point actually, and I was told it's best to do it sooner rather than later to prevent dirt from building up in the damaged area, plus it will help keep your window wiper blades from getting damaged too

Doesn't use up your excess either probably, generally you'd need your insurance certificate, or the policy number at least

Re: Stone chip on windscreen

Depending on your insurance policy, it should be free.

Re: Stone chip on windscreen

Having your insurance policy means they can check to see whether glass repairs are covered by your insurer. A vast majority are but some might not be.

Re: Stone chip on windscreen

That way they can send the bill through automatically I think - if not, they will give you the bill and you'd have to claim it back

Re: Stone chip on windscreen

I have had autoglass out to fix chips before, the quality of the fix is usually very good. On my old mondeo the repair was almost invisible.

Re: Stone chip on windscreen

You need to show Your Insurance certificate to the glass repairer, FOC if your Fully Comp, they bill the Insurance Company direct. You will not lose any No Claimes bonus.......Had the wifes windscreen done the other week Top Repair.

Re: Stone chip on windscreen

Thanks for the responses.

Can it still be repaired if it is in the drivers vision area? It's only a very minor chip - less than 2mm wide and a fraction of a mm deep.

Yep.........Excellent repair. Once it's done the repair will be a slightly different colour to the rest of the screen but if you don't know it's there you will not spot it. If you do not get it repaired by winter, water could get in then freeeze and could shatter the windscreen.

Re: Stone chip on windscreen

SWMBO had two repairs done in the wiper area of her windscreen some time back. No hit on her NCB and you really had a hard time trying to spot the repair.

There are a limited number of repairs before the screen has to be replaced.

Re: Stone chip on windscreen

Having re-inspected it it can hardly be described as a chip, more like a scratch. I checked my insurance and I get free repairs so I'll give them a bell next week.

If it's only a scratch try removing it with Jewlers Rouge...................... ( Polishing compound finer than Flour )

Re: Stone chip on windscreen

If it's only a tiny scratch and nothing that has the potential to form a crack across the screen it isn't worth worrying about, if it's not a chip as such then it's unlikely that it can repaired in the same way.

Re: Stone chip on windscreen

I have a couple of tiny "chips" and called in National Windscreens via my insurers. They said they were only "scuffs and had only just scratched the first layer of the laminated glass and so not worth repairing as they would not get worse.

They were happy to give me a report so that I could claim back of teh insurance in the unlikely event they got worse.

Caught my eye for a we while but never notice them now
