struts for bonnet

Do any of the MK 2s have struts fitted for holding the bonnet up or do they all have a bonnet rod
If they do can the be retro fitted without having to drill any holes

I know there are some about as i have seen photos of them fitted to MK2,s.I will have a look for them.

The MK5 Golf parts fit perfectly, you may need to work out a way to fix the lower bracket though. If you look at the bonnet you'll see that it's already drilled and shaped for the strut.

I have a bonnet strut fitted: as VRStu says, all fixings are in place: Obtained from an outfit in Daventry, but German made: will try to retrieve info for you, if you are interested, but won't be until tomorrow....... a very easy fit, but you need two people (one to hold the bonnet.....) for safety!

So will this be better than the milotec one that was on a 'group-buy' last year i.e. will it allow the bonnet to lift up higher (the milotec lifter does not take the bonnet as high as the manual strut).

it does give you quite a lot of travel yes, it is the OEM Golf strut etc and the bracket fits on the O/S strut top. Fitting the bracket to the strut has proved to be the hardest part.

Just had a look at my wife's Mk 5 Golf. The bottom bonnet strut bracket is very substantial and welded to the O/S suspension turret. I'm sure that VRStu is correct in saying that it would be a very difficult job to fit such a bracket. I also think that the Octavia's bonnet is a lot heavier than the Golf's so that could be a problem.

I had those parts fitted to my last Octy and I know of at least two others that have it and still use it. One has the bracket welded and one rivited.

I have had a look at the underside of my bonnet but there are no holes to receive any struts but there are a couple of dimples where they should be

I have a milotec one and the bracket with it needed modification. I know someone else in the same boat, although others were okay so not too sure what the differences were. I contacted Milotec, but they didn't seem bothered in looking into it

Haven't had any probs with my Milotec

(although, to be fair, it was Skoda who actually fitted it for me at PDI

how do you go about dropping the bonnet from a height to avoid denting the bonnet when pressing down to close it with the resistance from the struts?

I like orange, the future is orange!

I left it there incase the very outside chance I swapped it back to rod (can't be bothered now, plus i got shot of the rod after it had been sittig arounfd the garage for six months)

The strut is made to just exceed any forces through the arc it lifts through (they almost balance, except the lowest one foot or 30 cm for those of a metric persuasion).

The handle pops out the front of the grill when you release from cabin, and once you lift it the first one foot of its travel it lifts the rest of the way.

I always reach up and press down on the Skoda badge (so I don't get fingerprints on the bonnet paintwork or chrome grill) with just finger pressure and once the bonnet is about one foot from closed it drops shut and latches every time.

To be honest I have just read my description and realised the easiest way is to say it works pretty much just like a hatchback tail gate. You lift it the first bit and it continues to open itself. You pull or push it closed and it drops the last bit.

Exactly, and it lifts quite high enough: about the same as with the manual strut...... easy to fit, too! Yes, it was Milotec, but sourced in UK (Daventry), and nowhere near £88: I think I paid £48.

I find the regular one just fine, but indeed, in high winds, and with the bonnet sitting that high I tend to hold on to it with one hand just in case.
