Sudden road noise

2.0TDI Elegance - 76k on clock.

This week car suddenly developed excessive road noise.
After a 60mile journey today I got out of the car and felt the alloy wheels - 3 ok but n/s rear not hot, but very warm. Suspected wheel bearing?? Thoughts please................

Re: Sudden road noise

Check your tyre treads first, I had a sudden increase in road noise like a dud bearing and it was the rear tyres on the way out. Either that or a dud bearing or possibly a problem with the brake caliper.

Re: Sudden road noise

Would second that! the Contis mine came with seemed to become "noiser" overnight. I thought it was a bearing too, but a quick check showed bearings were fine, but tread down to about 2.5mm. Tolerated it for a few weeks, then went for new rubber! Low and behold, problem solved!!

Yep, same tyres and same tread depth. It started with a rythmic "thrumming" noise just like a duff wheel bearing. First noticed it driving up a slip road to a roundabout. I put it down to the wear markers specifically.

Re: Sudden road noise

if the wheel is hot, then I guess the bearing or binding brakes are the likely cause.

Re: Sudden road noise

I had a rear brake caliper seize on my previous car, a Mk1 Octy 1.9TDi. It made the alloy wheel warm but the disc was very hot - much hotter than the other side even after a short journey. I only noticed it when it started making a funny grinding noise when braking due to the pad being totally worn away and it being metal to metal. I didn't notice any noise during normal driving - just under braking.

Re: Sudden road noise

previous car a rover 416 (RIP) had a similiar problem, front offside wheel sounded like a stone was trapped in disc. wheel very hot.

cause of brakes binding...brake hose had collapsed inside acted like a non return valve not allowing brake caliper to retract

hope its something simple

cheers
