| Top speed??? How is this worked out? the car has done 5k now and after running it at around 100 for a fair time on a long private road , i got over taken by a vxr who at this point became my "pull out the unwanted attention car" and decided to give it a bit of a heavier foot but found i could only get the speedo up to just short of 130 and sat nav of 121 on flat straight ground, no wind or anything to slow me down. Book speed is iirc 134 or 136 is this speedo speed (which we all know to be out around 5%) or calibrated speed (which would indicate a speed of about 140.) |

| Briskodian | Re: Top speed??? the saxo will have a better weight to power ratio, perhaps you needed to drop a gear to get the revs up, to produce the torque required to accelerate past the mentioned speed?

| Re: Top speed??? You say that you have only done 5,000 miles? If that is the case you have got a while yet before you see your maximum performance. If you intend to drive the car quickly it is important that you start to use the full rev range. obviously don't redline it every where you go but steadily increase the amount of revs you use and on occasion take it just short of the redline i.e when going down a sliproad. only do this once the engine is fully warm. It can take upto 30,000 miles to get the most from an engine. I think that this is more critical in a car like yours which is normally aspirated, turbo engines are forced to perform but the same advice still applys (The above advice is given based upon my own experience others may disagree) Hope this helps! |

| Re: Top speed??? saxo? vxr would be a very fast vauxhall ![]() and it would be calibrated speed... a speedo reading of about 140 sounds right..... maybe give it a bit more time to run in? I know the diesels are happier at about 10k on.... not sure how long your engine may take to find it's "sweet spot"...... I would think it would improve though! edit: above beat me to it! lol...

| Re: Top speed??? I've got the same engine in an Elegance, (gets much better with passing miles by the way) but I suspect it is faster in fifth than top. Mine hasn't got to 19000 miles yet, and I'm sure it is much better now than at 5 to 10K. |

| Re: Top speed??? cheers, it was a astra vxr (like one i looked at before getting the skoda). I had gone up the rev range changing at around 5.5k as it feels pushed at that range even through the power seems to be felt at around 4.5k rpm. 6th gear seems to be cruising gear and not much use in heavy foot situations So basically the car is still running in (in a way) and therefore need to train it to get the full potential ![]() |

| Re: Top speed??? Well if you are getting a power output as good as that then you may be correct in suggesting that 6th is a cruising gear (I wouldn't know as I have never driven your model) Things like open windows, roof rails, mudflaps effect top speed. (also turn the aircon off) But to be fair there arent many cars that will live with an astra VXR in a straight line anyway. |

| Re: Top speed??? You tried against/to keep with an Astra VXR, in a TDi Octavia?! Why? I mean surely the minimum of 100bhp gap and a bit of Torque (if it was standard... ) would have put you off?

| Re: Top speed??? I drove a new octy vrs derv, on my private 11 mile road, and it wouldnt pass 130. I was quite shocked, as my petrol equivalent did an indicated 150 straight out the box.

Weight effects acceleration, handling and braking and going uphill also. Take a car with a top speed of 120 mph, fill it full of people, it will still do 120 mph just it will take longer to get there. | |
