I was driving along this morning and all of a sudden from no where a sound from the underside rear of the car, which can only be described as being like when a can of coke is shaken up and the pierced with a small nail (I know odd)...... started.

It gave me quite a shock and was one of those noises that made you think there was something seriously wrong. I pulled over straight away (engine still running), and looked underneath the car... nothing obvious to be seen - hoped back in and set of again - still there, but all of a sudden gone as quickly as it started

Drove the rest of the way to the supermarket - took it easy, had a nother nosey underneath, still nothing obvious.

Did a bit of shopping and returned to the car, started it up - no warning lights or anything.

Drove home, put my foot down a bit and tested the brakes... again all fine. Have just been out again and had another check and as before everything looks fine (no sign of leeking fliud, hole in the exhaust etc...)

Any ideas? Or is it as I am starting to think now just something that was trapped for a while under the car ?

Air con maybe??? Not a stone through the condenser I hope... Not sure how exposed they are mind.

The sound was 100% from the rear ?

If its the rear, then god knows, there isn't really anything it could be tbh...

The spare isn't flat is it?

Odd..............the only thing I can think of at the rear that could do that is the spare tyre and thats highly unlikely.
Like you say there could have been something caught under the car for a while.

Well god know's, the spare tyres fine, and the newspaper I stuck under the rear end is dry - so nothing leaking there..... The cars got its normal 40 mile commute tomorrow so if there is something wrong then I'm sure I'll find out

Just read about 'strange noise' and I too had this about 2 weeks ago! Happened about half a mile from local garage and car was up on lift for 20 mins and lo and behold "cant find anything wrong"! Car is '07 1.9TDi Est and not had any probs since

Wasn't a stone stuck in the rear brake? Or it could be the piece of rubbish theory. I've had both on previous cars and it goes as quick as it comes and you never do know what it is! Was it a piece of paper or a carrier bag - you will never know.

I have noticed loads of fast food rubbish in lay-bys etc - some people have no respect.

I had a similar noise from the front of my car over christmas, seemed worse when I turned.

As my car is only 4months old I called the Skoda Assist helpline. Within 2 hours an RAC guy turned up on my doorstep and told me about stones in the brake discs.
Its very common apparently, he whipped off the wheel pulled the disc forward and the stone fell out.

Felt a bit of idiot calling them really. But he said it was absolutelly no problem, as the noise it generates is really bad, especially if you have never heard it before, as I hadn't. Its even worse from outside the car.
