Whilst on the subject, I know many have praised Goodyears F1 Asymetric, but have any tried the Excellence ?

'Excellence' are lower in Goodyear's performance heirachy than the 'F1 Asymentic'.

More suited to an L&K or Ambient Octy than a vRS?

Re: What Tyres? Octy vRS

Well, i went for another set of Michelin PS-2's - This time i've got one in each ocrner instead of just the front

I wanted Directional tyres, but had good experience with the PS2's, and seeing as replacements arent coming directly out of my pocket for another 18months, might as well keep using them...

Sexy tread pattern? Ultrac Sessantas are sexier (and Giugiaro Design).

Bit more expensive though around £100 each and not as easy to get hold of.

I haven't found any difference in ride quality (ie 18s and dropped coils = FIRM) with the new tyres. They are also XL (extra load) stronger side walled (up to 630kg per tyre) and rated to 186 mph as per the outgoing Conti SportContact IIs were.

I did think they were a bit less sensitive initially, but that was either because the last tyres were "slicks" and the new tyres have some more tread to shimmy about on or simply the tyres needed to be bedded in and lose their factory sealed surface (the handy 8" by 5" product label still stuck on the tyre tread probably didn't help initial feel either!)

I cannot detect any differences in handling or noise TBH after a few hundred miles.

As for AVON, as mentioned supplier to RR, Bentley also Morgan, the GP Masters race series, Caterham, Formula Ford, British GT series, the Volkswagen Formula 3 series (A3), Connaught Motor Company, Vanwall.

Ultra-high performance tyres for sport orientated cars.
  • Superb wet weather grip
  • Excellent dry roadholding
  • Very predictable on-the-limit handling characteristics
  • Gives you total confidence in driving your high performance car hard and fast
  • Rim flange protector to guard your expensive alloy wheels against kerbing damage

Re: What Tyres? Octy vRS

Ive used Avon ZZ3's before (not on the Octy but a 320bhp fwd hatch) and they were probably the best all round tyre that car had on it - and it had a fair few different ones!!!!

Grippy as anything. I've not pushed them to the max in the wet yet, but they are specifically designed for that. They look good too!

I used both Toyo T1R's and Falken 452's on my Mk1 vRS. Toyo's felt a little better in both wet and dry whereas the Falkens were quieter and lasted a bit longer, in all honesty though the differences were slight, both however were miles better than the stock Conti 2's originally fitted. Will soon be needing some for my mk2 and may well go for Goodyears Asymetrics or the Vredstein Sessantas or even Uniroyals Rainsport 2's

Re: What Tyres? Octy vRS

Well guys, I have plumped for the Avon ZZ3's

I had the Falken 452's on my last car, and they were ok, but just fancy a change

£304 all in, delivered to your door from Camskill

Love the tread pattern as someone mentioned earlier

Much nicer than the Falkens anyway

Re: What Tyres? Octy vRS

Hi,

Due to pick up my new (used) Octy vrs TFSI next week but need to get some front boots as the ones on there only have about 4mm. I think that standard tyre is the Dunlop SP Sportmax - any thoughts on this??

Cheers,
Balham

From comments on here previously; change them to something else. Dunlops do not get a 'good press' from Briskodians.

Hmm yes done some more digging and have now struck Dunlops off the list - thanks for the pointer.

PS While not ideal I presume it's OK to leave Dunlops on the rear and just get something else for the front?

Well, I'm still running on Dunlop's all arround, waiting to change them in the end of this summer to Falkens. Thread is still good (17.000 km) but they are too slippery for me. In tight corners I can feel the tail loosing the grip more then it should. The other known issue is road noise. They are too damn noisy, both at the front and rear. If you can, get rid of them, that's my advice.
My idea is when time comes to change my Octy to a new one (I think it'll be Octy again, somewhere in mid 2010), I'll see if I can negotiate with dealer to order the new car with Falken or Toyo tyres from the factory. I don't know if this can be done, I mean if dealer would accept that.

Does anyone have experience with ordering the new car with tyres that factory usualy don't fit?

Re: What Tyres? Octy vRS

Ive just had some Goodyear Eagle F1s put on the front wheels, and the difference over my Toyo T1-Rs is outstanding. Handling has been transformed. FAR better turn in and the amount of lateral grip in both wet and dry is stunning.

Highly recommend them. I managed to get a good deal on them - £95 each supplied, fitted, and balanced. He even cleaned up my wheel bolts for me! (Mark Moss - Wetherby Moss Tyres )

That's an excellent price, struggling to get better than £125 a corner the moment for F1 asymmetric.

Re: What Tyres? Octy vRS

Just got another pair of FK452s fitted. After rotating my first pair to the rear for a while. So got them all round now, scrubbed in, and *VERY* happy

The Bridgestone Potenza S-03s (one of B'stone's top-o-the-line models) I also had were light years ahead of the OEM Dunlops that were on it, but the FK452s best the Potenza S-03s in every department imho.

I'd go as far as saying they are the best tyre I've had on a car yet, and I've gone through a few in my time

Question Re: What Tyres? Octy vRS

I've got a Octy PD vRS with 225/40/18 Continental SportContact 2's. I actually like them with good grip in the dry and the wet. The problem is the fronts will need changing soon after only 13,000 miles.

I must admit that I got the car last November (with 6000 miles) and it took me a while to get used to controlling the wheelspin with all that torque, which may have contributed to some of the wear.

Has anyone had any experience with the SportContact 3's, as I fancy keeping Continentals on both ends of the car?

I mixed some Yokahama's (rears) and Bridgestones (fronts) on an Honda Accord and ending up going backwards in the wet as the grip was so rubbish from the Yokahama's. I ended up putting them on the front and putting up with the understeer until I wore them out (as quickly as possible!).

Harry, what sizes are you running?
