And I know some will disagree with me....

Build quality
Quality of interior materials
Bigger rear accomodation
More accomplished all rounder - more mature in terms of style refinement (some would say this was a downside also though)
Styling (again, a personal thing)

The MK1 offered superior value for money imo

Yep... I'd say:

More power
More torque
Smoother engine
More acomplished chassis from stock
More interior room (coupled with feeling no bigger)
Better seats
Better dash
More comfort
More refinement

Mk2: Better chassis, vastly improved interior, nicer seats, more rear leg room, diesel option improved boot layout, more interior storage

Mk1: greater value for money, better kit (elec windows all-round +climatronic) as standard (rather than as a 'free' upgrade), Q car factor for the first few years of its life.

Basically the vRS has 'grown up'

Standard stereo is decent, unlike the on in the Mk1 - I know, you can get better ones but for a standard one it aint bad

Mk2 is also a more modern car, so it will be safer in regards crash tests and the likes too.

Yes the ability to use the full width of the boot when the back seats are laid down flat, without those obtrusive diagonal "stiffening bars" behind the back seat in the Mk1, is a distinct boon. The little "glove box" just underneath and right of the steering wheel is a nice touch, and the centre armrest/storage facility is nice; I'd got used to a centre armrest on my Mk1 SLX, and missed it on the Mk1 vRS.
One thing I did have on my Mk1 SLX and Mk 1 vRS was a full size alloy spare wheel, rather than the "50mph special" in my Mk2 vRS, but I presume that I was just lucky before and a matching alloy spare was never standard?

Errmm I have a full size spare in mine. It was certainly standard on the Mk1, and I am pretty sure it should be on the mk2

Mate of mine has just bought a Mk2 Octy diesel sport with alloys with 225/45/17's on, and that has a full size steel spare.

On the plus side the mk2 offers:

More weight
More remote from the road
More fuel consumed
More cost

On the down side the mk2 does offer:
Less value for money
Less room in the front
Less alloy wheels
Less chuckable
Less adjustable handling
