m25 variable speed cameras

just read this:

http://www.whatcar.com/news-article.aspx?NA=230818

anyone who uses the m25 just be aware that the variable speed cameras which used to only be on when the lower limits were in force are now going to be upgraded at some point to be digital, and switched on ALL THE TIME!

now i know we are all law abiding but i thought it was a bit sneaky, escpecially as they should then be painted yellow like the rest of the cameras out there

Re: m25 variable speed cameras

According to a friend the new cameras will be "variable" and "average speed". No idea how reliable the info is though....

Cameras never had to be yellow, it was just a DfT recommendation. I think its been omitted as a recommendation as well now.

I've heard that too regarding the cameras, but not sure. Surely they are digital anyway...

never said they had to be, just that they should be. beleive it or not those cameras up until now have been film fed. thast why they only really worked when the variable was in force, to help keep the film from running out too early. i was told they only went off if you went faster than 90mph when the limit was off. dunno how true that was though.

i just think to let everyone know the cameras have changed they should paint them yellow. if they arent visable they arent a deterent for speeding but simply a cash cow. (well i know thats what they are really lol!)

Re: m25 variable speed cameras

Apparently they have to leave 1 minute before a speed change displayed is enforced by the camera by law.

Re: m25 variable speed cameras

I think I read once that the cameras are painted yellow (or made hi-viz) if the local authority wants to keep the revenue raised. Cameras that are hidden/grey etc raise revenue for the Police or Governmental bodies. I.e. if they are revenue earners they should be yellow if they are there for a proper reason they can be hidden. Bit of a cynical view I know, but not far from the truth I reckon.

I read that too, but recently saw an article to say the latest ones can follow lane changers and square type number plates too.

Re: m25 variable speed cameras

I used to quite enjoy playing "which gantry has a camera attached" when I had to drive around the M25, it wasn't that hard a game to play, they were flipping great boxes, you couldn't miss them, maybe they've changed a bit?

Re: m25 variable speed cameras

the average speed cameras work read your number plate so it doesnt matter if you change lanes. thats why they have suddenly got so hot on illegal number plates recently.
