MSN and its usage

The thread on MSN being down got me thinking.

Just how important is MSN to people, compared with other forms of electronic communication?

I've been using t'internet for nigh on 16 years, and I've never used MSN or any of the other mainstream instant messaging systems.

I use email, bulletin boards, web forums, and private messaging and paging systems within those boards, used to use IRC, and even use the telephone. But not IM. And neither do the mates I communicate with online.

Is it an age thing? Are the under-30s who grew up with the net, more likely to use IM? Or am I (and my mates) unusual?

If you do use IM, do you use it mainly with people you know and have met, or mainly with online friends, or equally?

Just curious. I think I might have missed out on something, but I'm not exactly sure what.

Re: MSN and its usage

I have used MSN for about 7 years now. It's very convenient for talking to people that aren't close enough for cheap telephone conversations, as well as communicating with one person at once. It does have serious limitations though as a tool for conversing as emotions, facial expressions, tone of voice etc. are not communicated well, despite ever more inventive emoticons.

Re: MSN and its usage

I've been using t'internet for a similar amount of time (maybe even more ) and I use MSN cos it's an easy way of interactively chatting to one or more people without the need to devote all your attention to it. Our company has developed it's own (secure) IM client and there's lots of money to be made in this arena apparently

Go on try it .... you might like it

Noooo.....Don't take my MSN away from me!!

I have been on MSN since January this year. I rely on it to talk to people, and I find it a very social way to spend an evening without having to leave my house.

Addict - for certain!!

I like it to chat to just one person at a time, but find it frustrating as quite often you end up having several conversations at once and I always feel I must seem to be ignoring people as I reply to the others. And vice versa too. For the record I am defiantly over 30 .

On the plus side, it’s really convenient for sharing largish files instantly.

I agree, thats why I never really use it. I prefer email, text messages, PM or forums. I have MSN but I literally pop on and then back off to see whos online!

Re: MSN and its usage

SNM is the way forward! Have used it for years....since it was more basic than the built in windows messenger!! Infact, a few versions before that!

I have nearly 300 contacts but I only really like to talk to people I know in real life.

Some of the Brisky people I talk to on there I have never met, admittedly, but everyone kinda gets to know each other in the aforementioned multi-chats. We then start causing chaos on the boards! hehe!

I find it better than emailing because it's instant, better than texting because it's easier to type and you can fit more in the convo window, share files, have display pics and I can incorporate my 'meaningful lyrics' into my name

As Emily said, it's an easy way to socialise without having to go anywhere or spend money and if you want to have an important conversation, I often find it easier if it's text based. Not only do you not have to look the person in the face, but you can think about what you want to say too

I love MSN. It rocks.

Oh, and it's better than AOL, ICQ, Yahoo, Skpe or any other Instant Messenger! believe me, I've tried them ALL! Used to like ICQ white pages though, and the little 'eh-oh!' when you got a message... ..anyway...I'll shut up now

Oh, and sound clips/emoticons are ace too

whats the point? Why does it matter if they are online if you ain't gonna talk to em anyway!?

If you're only gonna email them, emails will sit and wait. They also might not notice that 'they have mail' (in that american computer woman's voice )

Re: MSN and its usage

Loz, I couldn't agree more!!

I have just under 100 contacts that I talk to regularly (half of them are from briskoda ) and it is a fantastic way to meet people.

For instance - Loz: where would I be without you to email and text at work!!?? Anf I mostly got to know you through msn!!

Lol, thats what my mates say. Its just that if its someone on there who I need to ask something (ie what homework do we have tommorrow?) then I can get an instant reply. If they aint on then I email or text them. All I meant was that I dont leave MSN on for people to annoy me with dirty popping up lol I just go on when I need to ask something or have a chat about something.

yeah...thats what it's for...obv if the person isn't on you will text or whatever. I do leave mine on alot, but I just leave the room, can't annoy me then can it? You just go on when you wanna talk - for some people thats longer than others.

The only time I email is from work, cos I can't get on MSN

Re: MSN and its usage

I use it sometimes, but in no way see it as some form of vital tool. I have a mobile phone with a decent "no worries" contract on it if I need to contact anyone. My dodgy net connection has made using MSN pointless in the last few weeks. Been the most unstable period of broadband usage I've ever experienced, conveniently timed for when I started getting "free" broadband through Orange.

Re: MSN and its usage

MSN, AIM and SkyPE here, MSN has got a lot better and it doesn't do popups unlike AIM which is a bl*ding pain.

That said, SkyPE has one advantage over the others which is that it encrypts the conversation. This is sometimes not only useful, but essential to prevent sensitive material getting sniffed out on the internal network. When I say sensitive I mean performance-related/decision-related stuff, rather than financial details etc.

It is both a curse and a blessing though, as you end up having to block/unblock large numbers of people regularly to be able to have a private life/work life separated on the same account.

We use MSN for company-related communications when on site (if possible) or to save tons of money on call cost, or if we have a language barrier where the person cannot pronounce things clearly & properly enough. Using MSN allows such a person to type things until they get it right without clogging up the email system, it is more instant.

Recently I'm running into more grief though as there appear to be limits of number of contacts where reliability starts to go downhill.

i use messenger to talk to all my mates that i went to school with and then briskoda people!!!

have 99 contacts who are friends and family and 123 who are briskoda!!!
